Renewable energy is blamed for jeopardising Europe's energy security this winter, a new study has found. The French multinational company Cap Gemini warned in their European Observatory of Energy Markets that energy security in Europe was under threat and that the region could soon be exposed to massive power outages during the winter, due to a lack of production capacity. They blame wind turbines.

Bayou Corne sinkholeJust over two months later, in the predawn blackness of Aug. 3, 2012, the earth opened up — a voracious maw 325 feet across and hundreds of feet deep, swallowing 100-foot trees, guzzling water from adjacent swamps and belching methane from a thousand feet or more beneath the surface.
Ground Gives Way, and a Louisiana Town Struggles to Find Its Footing - NYTimes.com
Water drains from the lake into the Floridan Aquifer through the sinkholes. These are usually partially or completely plugged with sediments, but collapse when groundwater levels drop, allowing lake water to funnel into the aquifer, which can virtually completely drain the lake. This usually happens every 25 years. The last time it drained was September 16, 1999.
It is difficult to determine what occurred, as all evidence was destroyed or washed away in the ensuing maelstrom. One explanation is that a miscalculation by Texaco about their location resulted in the drill puncturing the roof of the third level of the mine. This created an opening in the bottom of the lake. The lake then drained into the hole, expanding the size of that hole as the soil and salt were washed into the mine by the rushing water, filling the enormous caverns left by the removal of salt over the years. The resultant whirlpool sucked in the drilling platform, eleven barges, many trees and 65 acres (260,000 m2) of the surrounding terrain. So much water drained into those caverns that the flow of the Delcambre Canal that usually empties the lake into Vermilion Bay was reversed, making the canal a temporary inlet. This backflow created, for a few days, the tallest waterfall ever in the state of Louisiana, at 164 feet (50 m), as the lake refilled with salt water from the Delcambre Canal and Vermilion Bay. The water downflowing into the mine caverns displaced air which erupted as compressed air and then later as 400-foot (120 m) geysers up through the mineshafts

The first hydrocracking reactor arrived to Achinsk refinery on October 28. Its length is 48.5 m, diameter – 4.4 m, weight including mount – 1,306 tons. The equipment is transported for over 12,000 km: from Italian port of Mantova to port of Dudinka, then down the Yenisei to the temporary offloading facility in the village of Kubekovo. The last part of the journey is 203 km of highways. The truck haulage of the heaviest cargo for the longest distance set new Russian and European records. Achinsk refinery, the customer, and the Spetstyazhavtotrans Group, the haulage contractor, have become the nominees of the Guinness Book of Records.

Kvaerner is responsible for one of the largest and most complex engineering projects in history called “Troll A”. It is a gas production platform and the tallest structure ever moved by man relative to the earth. It has a gravity based structure (GBS), with a concrete substructure of 376 m. The total height from the seabed to the tip of the flare is 481 m, almost half a kilometer. Troll A weighs 683,600 tons; 1.2 million tons with ballast.

The Sidoarjo mud flow (Lusi) is the biggest mud volcano in the world; responsibility for it was credited to the blowout of a natural gas well drilled by PT Lapindo Brantas, although some scientists and company officials contend it was caused by a distant earthquake. At its peak Lusi spewed up to 180,000 m³ of mud per day.

The London Beer Flood happened on 16 October 1814 in the parish of St. Giles, London, England. At the Meux and Company Brewery on Tottenham Court Road, a huge vat containing over 135,000 imperial gallons (610,000 L) of beer ruptured, causing other vats in the same building to succumb in a domino effect. As a result, more than 323,000 imperial gallons (1,470,000 L) of beer burst out and gushed into the streets. The wave of beer destroyed two homes and crumbled the wall of the Tavistock Arms Pub, trapping teenage employee Eleanor Cooper under the rubble. The brewery was among the poor houses and tenements of the St Giles Rookery, where whole families lived in basement rooms that quickly filled with beer. At least seven people drowned in the flood or died from injuries.

Rumor has it that while Napoleon was suffering from a bad cough he accidentally ordered the execution of 1,200 prisoners. His officers had been awaiting orders from the emperor when he was seized by a coughing fit. The emperor exclaimed “Ma sacre toux,” meaning “My damn cough”. His men took his words to be “Massacre-tous” meaning “Massacre all.” However, accounts of the incident vary greatly and many doubt whether this ever happened.
