Kaikin puolin sellainen valmentajan rakastama kova luonteinen kaveri, jota vastaan olisi varmasti ikävä pelata.

On tullut tuttuun tapaan hankittua läjä draft guideja, joista seuraavaksi poiminnat. Suluissa näiden pelaajalle antama ranking.

Future Considerations (15th overall):

”Blessed with strong two-way puck sense, he is an appealing prospect. Not a tonne of flash in his game, but Farabee has no glaring holes in his game, which makes him an effective player. Skating, he works off his edges and opens up ice. He’ll not shy to drive towards the net and he knows how to find the soft spots on the ice. His shot is quick-released and he knows how to use it – and how to make a quick pass instead. The only drawback to his distribution game is that sometimes he’ll pass up a terrific shooting opportunity and opt for an attempt at a highlight-reel setup, which can end up as turnovers. This crops up especially on power plays. He’s shown lots of deception in the short game. Consistently, he creates chances with his skating and his playmaking ability. He stickhandles close to his body and can escape pressure situations with quick moves. The Cicero, N.Y., native’s compete level is high. He’ll race for the puck and battle along the wall in all three zones, and he knows how to attack a defender and suffocate space. He is a decent defensive player, but doesn’t show aggressiveness making plays deep in his own zone. Farabee is one of the most impressive forward prospects coming out of the U.S. this year, thanks to his elite stickhandling ability and his knack for making plays at top speed.”

Hockey Prospects (12th overall):

”Joel Farabee had an excellent season for the USNTDP, playing a key offensive role on the top-line, mostly with Hughes and Wahlstrom, while being deployed in all situations. He recorded 70 points in 57 games this past season and is slated to play for the University of Boston after next year.

He is a two-way winger that plays above his weight class and has a rare combination of skill paired with a relentless drive. His best attributes are his vision and his hockey-sense, he’s also one of the best playmaking wingers in this draft class and is capable of making skilled passes that are difficult for opponents to gauge yet are easy for his teammates to handle. His passing ability is amplified when taking into account his hockey IQ which is very high; he reads developing plays quickly and is ahead of the play in most instances which allows him to make set ups with the puck on his stick that surprises defensive-units. His intelligence also allows him to control the tempo of the game in the offensive-end, he’s excellent at changing the rhythm of a play to his liking and switching the conditions on the ice by re-opening lanes for his passing options. His shot is also an offensive weapon, similar to Wahlstrom, he’s capable of hiding his intentions with his shooting mechanics and can release shots with surprising velocity given his build, he’s also displayed great accuracy in our viewing’s by finding small seems on goalies while shooting at severe angles. Furthermore, his puck skills are high-end and he’s a creative player, who takes advantage of his ability to process the play at a fast rate, which lead to several wellexecuted give-and-go sequences with his teammates throughout the season.

Although slight of frame, Farabee has a powerful lower-body which he uses to push off into a fluid stride, his skating mechanics are a plus and he’s capable of starting and stopping on a dime. His skating ability when combined with his surprising strength, makes him difficult to handle on the forecheck for opposing players. We have seen him physically out-muscle and out-battle against much larger players, even tossing them to the ice on some plays. His defensive game is also advanced for his age and his position, he’s good at reading the play without the puck and was used in a penaltykilling role where he generated several short-handed chances. One criticism with his game, although it’s a small one considering it’s rare, is that occasionally he doesn’t seem as engaged as he should be, for instance we watched him in games where he doesn’t use his skill-set as much as could have for a period or two before becoming noticeable on the ice later in the game.

Farabee was not a passenger on his line, despite playing with excellent players, he was more than capable of driving possession without them and at times was the motor for them, showing a high-degree of versatility. We feel that Joel has untapped potential due to his style of play converting well if he grows a thicker frame which should develop in the coming years. ”

“He’s smart and always effective, liked him last year. He and Wahlstrom are good together. His frame is too small for me to be as aggressive as you are on him though. I like him as a mid first.” - NHL Scout, October 2017

“I think he’s a complete player and maybe the most offensively creative forward in this draft.” HP Scout, Dusten Braaksma

“Just solid across the board, a productive player who competes.” - NHL Scout, May 2018

“Take it for what it’s worth, but I had one scout single him out as an one of the combine interview that didn’t impress him. The player impresses me on the ice and I didn’t get other bad feedback. I have never interviewed him myself.” - HP Scout, Mark Edwards

McKeen’s Hockey (12th overall):

”Raised in a hockey playing household, Joel Farabee’s two older brother, Jacob and Jesse, parlayed a respectable amount of skill to spots in NCAA DIII schools. Nice players, but not getting the scouts out. Joel, despite not being nearly the size of his older brothers, was always able to stand out. Even at age 15, playing U16 hockey in Syracuse (he is from nearby Cicero, NY), Farabee committed to Boston University, one of the best hockey schools in the country. Not long after, he was invited to try out for the hot-house program in Plymouth Michigan and made it, splitting his age 16/17 season between the U17 and U18 rosters. He was the leading scorer for the former squad.

This year he took things to another level, showing a game that was highly effective both with and without the puck. By year’s end he trailed only the number five ranked draft prospect Oliver Wahlstrom in scoring, although 16 year old Jack Hughes would have also been on top had he spent the full season with the U18 team. The funny thing about watching Farabee on the USNTDP, was that he always gives off the impression that he could actually produce quite a lot more, but he is being tasked with certain roles that are less conducive to racking up points and he aims to prove his reliability first and foremost. This reliability raises the floor on what his future holds. Farabee is a strong skater, if not quite a speed demon. It plays up, though, thanks to excellent acceleration. If he was a car commercial, the announcer would be talking about his top of the market 0-60 time. His playmaking skills are fantastic as well. He makes at least one jaw dropping pass per game. His assist totals were not acquired cheaply.

He has a very good shot, too. He mostly relies on a wrist shot and has a knack for getting one through to the net through heavy traffic. Of course, as hinted at above, his hockey IQ is very high. He plays heavy minutes on both special teams units for the program, is extremely diligent off the puck and plays the wing like a center, in a way that reminds me of Mikael Granlund. This is one of the reasons why I expect he could produce more in another role. On the power play, for example, Farabee is often deployed in front of the net, even though he is somewhat undersized. Given more freedom to roam, he could be more productive on the man advantage. Which brings us back to his brothers. Jacob is listed at 6-4”, 201 pounds. Jesse measures in at 6-3”, 185. Joel is in the 5-11” – 6-0” range, depending on who measured him, and tips the scales at 168 pounds. Chances are he is not yet done growing. He plays a heavier game than most of his size, but I would hazard to guess that this element of his game would be even more effective if he has another growth spurt in him.”

ISS Hockey (11th overall):

”Farabee is a skilled, playmaking type that makes everyone around him better. He has elusive speed that catches defenders off guard at times He is quick to jump into holes for loose pucks and wins most races to pucks. A leader on the ice who can be used in all situations. No weaknesses in his game while he does everything well. Strong lower body with good character, drive makes him a player you love to have on your team. Able to hold on to the puck, can pass and drive to the net. Excellent penalty killer. He is always in the right spot at the right time and the puck seems to follow him around the ice.”

“Gifted playmaker with a very high hockey IQ - incredibly mature for just a 17-year old young man. Big time character and leadership ability. Bright future. Will play at next level and have success." Director of Scouting, Dennis MacInnis

“Very smart two-way forward. Has a great ability to read/anticipate and puts himself in the right position to make plays. Has good vision, quick hands, makes smart reads on zone entries and attacks one-on-one.” ISS Scout Tim Zeches

“Good hands in front of the net and proved to be deadly from the slot, has an excellent wrist shot. Good reads on the play developing from the neutral zone and anticipated well. Good puck possession player who loves to shoot from any angle.” ISS Scout Genel Zyle

Recrutes (22nd overall):

”The old scouting adage that undersized forwards struggle to produce come playoff time has been put to rest in recent years as undersized wingers like Jon Marchessault, Tyler Johnson and Viktor Arvidsson have flourished in a league that has trended more towards the skill game. It is rare for a 160-pound winger to get selected in the top 20 of the draft, so for Farabee to be getting that consideration is an indication of just how highly regarded he is in the scouting community. It helps when you consistently score goals and put up big numbers. Farabee was an offensive force for the US development team in the USHL, notching 33 goals and 76 points in 52 games. He was also a consistent producer and competitive in all U-18 tournaments from beginning to end, wrapping up the season with four goals and four assists in the U-18 Championship.

“He’s a very smart player,” noted one US-based scout who saw Farabee at least 15 times. “NHL hockey sense for sure, makes plays. Really good skill; he has a really goods hot and NHL release, and he competes his ass off. He finishes checks. He’s very very competitive, never cheats you, a really good all-around player” Scouts like to see elite-level skating from undersized prospects, and it’s the one area of Farabee’s game that may keep him out oft he top 20 on Friday night. “I don’t think he’s a great skater,” noted one scout. “He has that wide-track stancea nd he’s 160 pounds. You see him off the ice and do your body assessment and you start to add it up...he might always be a light guy .I like him, I’ve got him as a first-round guy ,but I think there’s a little bit more of a miss factor than some guys think.”

Scott Wheeler – The Athletic (10th overall):

”Farabee is one of those players who won’t break open a game with pure skill, but will finish after 18-20 minutes of ice time with a goal or an assist and a huge backcheck to prevent one at the other end. He’s a high-end skater and he uses it to play an aggressive forecheck, break up plays and retrieve possession. He may not become a first-line player but he’s got better playmaking and scoring touch than he’s given credit for in Wahlstrom’s shadow. He can escape trouble with light footwork on his edges or a deft curl in tight to his body. Once he gets stronger, he’s got a very good chance of becoming an excellent two-way forward who can play with shooters or playmakers. Give him a couple years at Boston University and you may get something really special. He’s going to be a reliable NHL player.”

Corey Pronman – The Athletic (27th overall):

”Farabee had a great season for the USNTDP being one of their best all-around forwards. I wouldn’t describe Farabee as a dynamic offensive player, but he does a lot well. Farabee handles the puck at an above-average level, can make defenders miss, and can both create chances and finish them. He skates fine, he lacks a true separation gear, but he can push the pace when he needs to, works hard and, with his hustle, gets to where he needs to go. Farabee wins battles despite being undersized, being a reliable defensive forward, and was one of the best penalty killers for the NTDP, including being a shorthanded threat. His best attribute is his intelligence. Farabee shows great overall instincts as a playmaker and makes consistently good decisions at a quick pace. While he put up very good numbers this season, I am skeptical of him projecting out as a very impactful offensive player as a pro. He’ll become a coach’s favorite though with how reliable and hard he works every shift combined with a good talent level.”

USNTDP U18 coach Seth Appert said: “He’s a complete player. He creates a ton of offense without any cheat to his game. He’s a 200-foot player. He’s a great penalty killer and dangerous shorthanded. He’s got the skill level to break you down 1-on-1 and make plays through people. He’s the absolute fiercest competitor.”

Nuo draft-combinen mitat 6’0’’ / 162 lbs osoittavat heti yhden selvän kehityskohteen eli voimaa ja lihasta olisi saatava kroppaan lisää, jotta voisi NHL:ssä pärjätä. Se, että noinkin heiveröisillä raameilla on pystynyt tuollaiseen suorittamiseen, kertoo toki ainoastaan hyvää niistä muista ominaisuuksista. Seuraavat pari-kolme kautta menevät siis NCAA:ssa Bostonin yliopiston laadukkaassa kiekko-ohjelmassa.

Future Considerations (40th overall):

”An offensive centerman, he’s a strong skater who can accelerate quickly through the neutral zone. His skating ability and his edgework allow him to create lots of time and space, making him a very difficult player to defend. It’s amazing how open he is able to get. To his credit, even with his reputation, he can still roam free, find the dead areas of coverage, and get good looks on net. He always keeps his feet moving and, because of that, he draws a lot of penalties. He’s always noticeable on the ice for the right reasons. He a competitive player with a great motor. He will venture into corners to retrieve pucks and he also has the ability to drive the net hard. He’s got strong puckhandling skills. He’s a workhorse, logging tonnes of minutes. On the penalty kill, he’s an ace. On the power play, he works from the half wall, but he can also handle duties at the point. He owns a quick and strong wristshot. Good release. He is a leader, the kind of guy who makes all the players around him better. The biggest knock on him is his size, but he has enough skill to make up for that deficiency. Not to mention a commendable compete level. He will battle in the corners and along the boards regardless of opponent. He is able to elevate his play when the game demands it. A clutch player who rises to the occasion every time.”

Hockey Prospects (24th overall):

”Jay O’Brien was selected in the 4th round, 96th overall by the Youngstown Phantoms in the 2015 USHL futures draft. However, he’s primarily played with Thayer Academy, posting 80 points in 30 games. The Wise injury opened up a spot for him and although he was a late birthday, they selected him to join the team in the early pre-season games including the Fall-Classic and later against Michigan State on the USNTDP U18 team where he looked very impressive while putting up an additional 2 points in 7 games. What makes O’Brien’s situation unique is that his late birthday makes him ineligible to play in international tournaments like the Four Nations and the U18 World Championships so there’s a lack of international exposure there. He’s also slated to play for Providence College next season.

His addition to the USNTDP line-up was so seamless was due to his hockey-sense. He has excellent anticipation both with and without the puck, this allows him to find soft-ice and get into position before receiving passes at a consistent rate around the slot area and allows him to identify openings for transitional plays. His decision making is also very good due to his ability to process information on the ice rapidly, this allows him to create and be apart of give-and-go sequences with a high degree of execution. Above all else, his intelligence that he’s displayed has lead him to quickly adapting to a higher-level of competition. His hockey sense is also noticeable in the defensive-end where he’s good at intercepting pass attempts, he backchecks aggressively when needed and is willing to support his defenseman when the play calls for it on most sequences.

O’Brien’s a powerful kid whose developed an explosive first-step which he uses to surprise his opponents and beat them one-on-one when driving wide or when rushing the puck up the ice. His edges allow him to change directions quickly and create an element of surprise. His top-gear is good and he can use it to play a complete game by forechecking effectively and also being defensively responsible on the ice when the play is going the other way. His puck-skills are good, he’s got soft-hands and can utilize a variety of dekes to beat defenders one-on-one or to bait an opponent into reopening a shooting lane where he can use his wrist-shot. His shot has a high-end release, he generates power and he’s good at shooting the puck in one motion, it’s not an easy shot for goalies to pick up. His passes have a high-degree of precision, he’s capable of threading soft-passes through tight seams on the ice and generates several quality set ups in our viewings. O’Brien is a well-rounded player with a level of versatility, his pacing can be difficult to keep up with and this makes him capable of making a forechecking play as well as a high-end play. One thing we really like about him is that there’s no area in his game that stands out as a glaring weakness at this point in time.

When he stepped onto the ice for his first couple of shifts for the USNTDP, it was evident that he wasn’t a player who looked lost on the ice or got caught trying to do too much, instead there was a lot of confidence in his game, with each passing play that he executed properly you began noticing his presence on a shift-to-shift basis. He’s got a high compete level, plays a 200-foot game, and has a skill-set that we believe can translate to the pro level.”

“The O’Brien kid looks like an ‘A’ player to me.” NHL Scout, September 2017

“We have him as an early 2nd rounder.” NHL Scout, February 2018

“I just saw him again and I’m back in the first round boat.” - NHL Scout, April 2018

“A hard working skilled center.” - NHL Scout, May 2018

“Starting at the All American Prospects Game I liked his game. I followed up with some viewings of him playing with the USNTDP and thought he was really good with limited ice. In his prep games he had more time and space and it allowed me to see his skill. He’s smart and although not huge, he has skill and works hard. I’m a big fan.” HP Scout, Mark Edwards

“He had a very productive combine for both interviews and on the testing floor. I spoke to him 1 on 1 after his testing and that conversation did nothing to change my draft ranking for him. He gave me a good self assessment of his game.” HP Scout, Mark Edwards

McKeen’s Hockey (48th overall):

”More and more, your prospects who want to pursue college hockey instead of major juniors, are trying their luck in Tier I hockey instead of the traditional prep ranks. There are still a few players every year who stay in their hometowns to compete, although those have often tended to be Minnesotans, such as Casey Mittelstadt last year. This year, the most (and only) prominent draft eligible who spent the bulk of his aiming for hometown glory was Jay O’Brien, who starred for Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts, about 20 minutes’ drive from his hometown of Hingham, Mass. The alma mater of Tony Amonte and hot shot Vancouver prospect Adam Guadette, O’Brien excelled in his last two seasons on campus, under the tutelage of the aforementioned Amonte.

Considering the wildly varying levels of the players he was often playing with and against, different parts of his game would shine on different nights. Sometimes, you could see an above average first few steps, allowing him to take off in a flash. Other times, he would impress with his blistering shot, especially his accurate wrister. He is a talented stickhandler as well, although that attribute of his game will be tested more strenuously when he gets to the collegiate ranks next year with Providence. He will also get some much needed work on his physical game. He is currently rather lean and did not need to crash or bang for Thayer, but will definitely need to show more fight at the next level. O’Brien had minimal opportunities thus far at higher levels, suiting up seven times for the USNTDP and once for Youngstown of the USHL this year, but has shown enough in the prep ranks to be the first high schooler off the board and an interesting follow for the next few years.”

ISS Hockey (46th overall):

”Draft Sleeper!! O’Brien is a skilled center that is dangerous when he has the puck on his stick in the scoring areas. Was selected 2018 American Family Insurance ALL-USA Player of the Year. O’Brien scored 43 goals and 80 points helping Thayer reach the New England Prep School Athletic Council Large School Tournament title game. Has high end puck skills. Very creative in the offensive zone and possesses great playmaking skills. Very good skater with excellent top speed. Competes well and chases loose pucks. Will need to improve his strength to be able to play at the next level.

“Very explosive and not afraid to try to beat the defenseman on the outside. His compete level is elite and showed a willingness to go to the dirty areas. Uses his body well to shield the puck. Played in every key situation. Head is up with puck and makes the right decisions. Lots of tenacity and has a good second effort.” Director of Scouting, Dennis MacInnis

“Good skater. Great control of his edges can accelerate quickly in tight spaces. Great hands. Can stickhandle and control puck in traffic. Uses his body well to protect the puck against bigger players. Quick release, accurate shooter. Finds players in space. Has a good feel for the ice. Has some coverage issues in the defensive zone. Good prospect, with high-end offensive skill.” ISS Scout Nick Marra

Recrutes (25th overall):

”It all started with a highlight reel goal int he USHL Fall Classic. O’Brien cut into the middle with terrifica gility and skill and then unleashed a blaz-i ng wristshot that had scouts double checking their lineups to see just who had pulled off that jaw-dropping move. His strong performance prompted scoutst o be making multiple sojourns to Thayer Academy for the first time since Jeremy Roenick and Tony Amonte were hotshot draft eligible prospects 30 years ago. “He’s been very good for me every time I’ve seen him this year,” said one scout who has him ranked as a first rounder. “Besides size, I like everything about him. “A really good skater, really smart, really good skill, he can make plays, he’s going to score, he shows up every game and competes really hard. He’s a pretty safe bet for a high school player.”

Safe is an understatement - he’s a draft wildcard thanks to his prolific numbers. Roenick and Amonte scored 35 and 30 goals respectively at Thayer in their draft years...O ’Brien notched 43. “He probably doesn’t get taken in the first round, but knocks on the door,” said one scout. “The high school kids who usually go in the first are 6-3 skilled guys. I think he goes in the upper half of the second.” Scouts that saw him in the season ending Tier 1 Midget Nationals are well aware of the buzz surrounding him, and that’s normally a sign that he is the player very much on the rise. The difficult part is trying to project high school players. “He's gotten a lot of hype, and I think he was really good at the end in Philadelphia,”said one scout. “He's very good in that league. He's supposed to be dominant and he is. I hear he goes in the first.”

Corey Pronman – The Athletic (45th overall):

”O’Brien is the top prep prospect in this class and, throughout the season, has proven his worth be it at the All-American prospects game, at the USNTDP suiting up against USHL players or at the high school level. He’s a skilled center who can make difficult offensive plays off the rush. He’s confident with the puck and isn’t afraid to hold it for an extra second. His skating has looked fine to me, but I’ve seen shifts where a slightly awkward stride can limit his explosiveness. O’Brien, to me, is more of a playmaker, but his finishing skills are competent for the pro level. He’s a fierce competitor, who battles for pucks as hard as anyone in this class and is quite strong on the puck for a player who measures in at 5-foot-11.”

Cape Cod U18 Whalers coach Andrew Orpik said: “His work ethic and drive to get better is as good as anyone I’ve ever coached.”

-----------------------------

Sitten eilisen muut asiat.

No niin laitetaanpas jotain toisestakin päivästä.

Aloittivat päivän varaamalla ruotsin U18-joukkueen kapteenin puolustaja Adam Ginningin (6’4’’ / 205 lbs / L). Seuraavaksi muiden ajatuksia.

Future Considerations (73rd overall):

”Prone to inconsistent play on the blue line, he can make mistakes in bunches. Many are decision-making gaffes in his own zone. His skating is suspect – not great speed, not great acceleration – but his balance is terrific. Speedy forwards, however, can burn him. On the plus side, Ginning can use his big body to simply dominate shifts in the defensive zone, throwing hits and using his strength to win pucks along the boards. He can also poke check well and use his stick to slow down attackers, forcing them off-line. He can take over in his own zone, but he can also end up out of position – or simply do the wrong thing. At times, though, he can display decent hockey smarts. He shows great anticipation and has made a habit of intercepting passes in the neutral zone. His gap control is notably good. He owns a slapshot – heavy but not very accurate – that he doesn’t use very often. His puckhandling is OK, but he struggles when he tries to do something complicated. If he sticks to simple outlets, his game improves. Ginning also displays leadership skill, encouraging his teammates if the score is not in their favour. He communicates well on the ice, too. He’s a mixed bag – intimidating size and aggressiveness, but suspect decision-making at times. A flawed game, but he owns a strong frame.”

Hockey Prospects (49th overall):

”Adam Ginning had a solid development year for the Linkoping HC J20 team and their pro team where he put up 2 points in 28 games and had 1 assist in 7 playoff games. He was featured at the Hlinka, Five-Nations and U18’s where he played top-pairing minutes primarily with Boqvist and showed that he was capable of shutting down the top opposition.

Ginning has excellent size, featuring a thick core and broad shoulders that gives him leverage when competing against opponents along the boards, as well as when he’s attempting to block shooting lanes and when he’s competing for space in the slot area by boxing-out the opposition. Furthermore, he’s got above-average defensive awareness, consistently tracking backdoor passing options, playing positionally sound and evaluating passing lanes and shooting lanes in advance of certain plays. That being said, he does have a tendency to play overly physical at times which inadvertently throws him out of position. We have seen him fail to track the puck on some plays, which puts him into an instinctive mindset to throw his weight around even when the smarter play would have been to attempt to track the puck and use his stick to get the puck out of danger. Despite his physical instincts getting the better of him at times, he does play with confidence in his own-end, shows poise without the puck on his stick when dealing with odd-man situations and has a long reach which he uses during shot deflections and when attempting to disrupt plays. He’s also good at handling in-coming forechecking sequences by using his frame to guard the puck and his first pass to move it out of the zone. We watched him consistently keep up against men in the SHL and against good offensive-oriented players at international tournaments. This was in large part due to the above-mentioned attributes and also due to his skating mechanics. Despite being a bigger kid, Ginning has good four-way mobility and is capable of using strong edges to pivot when necessary, this also allows him to prevent players from cutting around him most of the time and close his gaps quickly. He plays with a good pace is his own-end and he competes aggressively, not letting up or giving opponents much breathing room.

His overall offensive-game isn’t nearly as advanced as his defensive game currently is but he does have some interesting tools. He’s got enough confidence to handle the puck when driving down a wing and has the speed to cut aggressively using a well-timed pinch, however he’s not as confident holding onto the puck while walking the line for extended periods of time. This is primarily due to playing a stream-lined game, he doesn’t look to use his hands to create fakes and re-open lanes as much as he probably could since his puck skills are above average. He’s shown the ability to use his hands to drag the puck away or towards his body or make a quick backhand to forehand deke and is good at executing his move-set while under pressure but doesn’t use his hands often. However, he does show flashes of high-end passing ability, we have seen him make no-look reverse spinning passes from the point and have them land directly on the tape of his teammates but he doesn’t do it with any sort of regularity at this point in time. His slapshot is hard and he’s capable of getting it through traffic, he also is good at keeping the shots between the ankles and hip areas so that they are easily deflected, although he prefers finding an open teammate as opposed to attempting to generate shots from the point in most of our viewings. He’s got a decent amount of offensive-awareness but prefers to play a more reserved style of game when in the offensive-zone.

Ginning has a solid foundation, showing a good first pass, a high-level of compete, and the physical tools to shut-down some of the better forwards featured in this draft class. He looks like a hybrid shut-down defender who can move the puck and has some untapped raw offensive-upside but hasn’t found his comfort zone in that area of his game yet.”

“Impressed me with my interview with him at the NHL Combine.” HP Scout, Mark Edwards

ISS Hockey (17th overall):

”A big, stay-at-home defenseman with good hockey sense that provides a strong defensive presence. Skates well and mobile for a guy his size. Makes quick zone exits with hard and accurate passes. Plays strong and aggressive in the defensive zone. Not hesitant with the puck and can withstand pressure. Offensively, he will never put up big numbers, but has potential to develop his offensive game. Played well during U18 Five Nations tournament and was a defensive force for his team. Played the body and killed penalties on a regular basis.”

“Makes the game look easy at times and plays a controlled game. Captained his team and provided leadership with his physical play. Played with poise and patience - never seems to be in trouble. Ginning has all the tools just needs time to put it all together.” Director of Scouting, Dennis MacInnis

“Strong in front of the net and along the boards, efficient exit. Great first pass. Can disarm opponents both with stick or body. Can play long shifts without losing head.” ISS Scout Fredrik Johansson

“Big, two-way defenseman. Plays in all situations. Skates well for a big guy. Moves well for his size. Not hesitant with the puck and can withstanding pressure. Moves solid laterally and can adjust his speed to control gaps effectively.” ISS Scout Joakim Eriksson

McKeen’s Hockey (42nd overall):

”One of the more contentious draft eligible prospects between those who prefer “old-time” scouting values and those who are more devoted to modern analytics, with Adam Ginning, as with most caught in the cross-fires, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Traditional scouting types appreciate his game as he is tall and broad and sound in his own zone. He positions himself well, has good stick placement, keeps a tight gap, and is a penalty kill staple. He also moves well enough for his size. The analytics point to his stat line as a big black mark. Even for an 18 year old defenseman, two points in 28 games at the SHL level will cause people to cringe. In fairness to them, Ginning will never be a power play quarterback. In fairness to the traditional observers, he has a pretty high floor.

We are here to tell you that his upside is higher than it seems. For starters, only Rasmus Dahlin played more games in the SHL as an under 18 player this year. Nils Lundqvist, who we have a few spots higher, also played 28 games, and had only five points, yet we can still laud him as a future offensive defenseman. Ginning did not play solely in the SHL, so we can see how he produced against his age peers. Frankly, it was much better. Six points in 17 games in the SuperElit. Four points in a very strong performance wearing the Sweden uniform at the WU18 tournament. Four points in five games for Sweden at the pre-season Ivan Hlinka. He does not have the hands to be a great playmaker, but he does own a strong wrist shot that he can use from distance which he keeps low to create tips and rebounds. He also shows signs of above average mobility as well. Teams will neglect his untapped offensive upside at their own peril.”

Recrutes (39th overall):

”If NHL scouts were as enamoured with Ginning as the Swedish hockey federation, you’d see a team stepping up to select him in the top 20. Few Swedish defencemen in the past decade have played as many games as Ginning did at the U-18 level, and in this year’s U-18 tournaments he was team captain and the go-to blueliner in terms of ice time and shutdown responsibilities. “His skating is better than I gave him credit for originally, and so is his hockey sense,” said one eastern conference scout.“ His skating I think will be fine for the type of defenceman he's going to be. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes at the end of the first round.” The consensus among scouts interviewed by Recrutes suggests that Ginning is morel ikely to be selected in the 35-45 range than in the first round due to a lack of offensive upside and minor skating concerns in a league heading more towards speed. “I really like him, I just don't know where his upside is,” said a scout that ranks him outside the top 35. “I guess four is the best he can be, but he might be a (fifth). Depends how his skating comes, and he’s not a puck guy. But ultra competitive, hard to play against... and he's not a dummy.” There has been an NHL trend in the past few years to employ smaller puck-moving defencemen instead of big, shutdown types in the bottom three. This year’s NHL playoffs were a reminder that size isn’t about to disappear, especially on the blueline in tight-checking games. Ginning is one of the more effective shutdown defencemen in this draft, and may be picked higher than his upside would suggest if there is a team looking for a bottom-pairing/penalty-killing stalwart on its back end.”

Corey Pronman – The Athletic: (ei sijoitusta Pronmanin omalla 74 nimeä sisältäneellä varauslistalla)

”Ginning is a big defenseman without great skill. I see a lot of things to like in his game. He’s a good skater for a big man, and he uses his mobility to close gaps and make a lot of stops. He’s also quite physical, leaning on players with his big frame. When you add in above-average defensive IQ, he can be a true shut-down defender. While his hands aren’t great, I think he moves the puck fine, but there have been times where he looked very limited. He can use his skating to get out of trouble and make decent outlets to take tough defensive minutes and get the puck in the right direction. I won’t advocate for him though.”

Flyers Scout - Joakim Grundberg:

"He's a big guy. Good reach, more of a defensive guy, good with the puck though. Really competitive, plays hard. We like him a lot."

Seuraavaa varausta saikin hetken odottaa.

Future Considerations (146th overall):

”A promising blueliner, he’s a consistent two-way presence, which means oodles of ice time – toppairing, power play, penalty kill, overtime deployment. He’s a factor in getting the puck out of his zone with his hockey smarts and his solid puck mobility skills. Quick, strong decisions out of him. When he’s in his own zone, his focus remains on defending – there’s no cheating up ice. He’s very sound in the backend of the rink. With an active stick and active feet, he is able to steadily close gaps and create turnovers in all areas of the defensive zone. At both blue lines, he’s a rock. Rarely does he get beat one on one. In the offensive zone, he’s a guy who wants the puck when he’s on the blue line. With his poise, he has quarterbacking abilities on the point. He’s very confident with the puck on his stick and he’s able to make pretty good plays. On the attack, he can be patient in possession, waiting for the right passing or shooting lane. He isn’t afraid to mix it up after the whistle, either. His second year of eligibility for the draft, he’s shown an uptick in a number of areas – offensive production, confidence with the puck, consistent approach to defending. His skillset is showing great maturation and he’s brought a leadership piece to his game as well. Don’t sleep on him. Decent upside here in the defender.”

Hockey Prospects (189th overall):

”The Manhattan Beach, CA native just finished his 2nd season in the USHL and is a Re- Entry prospect for the 2018 NHL Draft after going unselected last year. St. Ivany saw a significant uptick in his offensive production from a year ago where he only registered 10 points in 52 games. This season St. Ivany registered 6 goals and 30 assists in 54 Regular Season games for Sioux Falls. (5th among USHL defenseman)

St. Ivany has good frame at close to 6’3”, however he still has a ways to go strength wise as he lacks lower body strength and explosiveness in his footwork. Defensively St. Ivany uses his reach and active stick to take away time from his opponent and does a good job challenging plays at his own blue line and closing players off to the outside against the rush. Jack needs to add more grit and physicality and make things harder on opponents in front of his own net and in puck battles as he has been susceptive to losing battles. St. Ivany distributes the puck well on break outs and is able to stretch the ice using his vision and passing ability. He possesses good puck skills and is able to carry the puck up ice and through traffic when the situation calls for it. St. Ivany can run the Power Play at the point efficiently. While St. Ivany doesn’t possess explosive footwork he has above average agility and east-west movement and is active on the offensive blue line in trying to open up lanes and will come down from the point, both with and without the puck and try to chip in on the offense. Much of St. Ivany’ s upside is contingent on him adding bulk to his frame and gaining lower body strength which he will have time to do going to college route. St. Ivany is expected to attend Yale in the fall.”

“Has a high hockey IQ and plays an athletic game, needs to get stronger and improve his footwork before he is a pro prospect” HP Scout, Dusten Braaksma

“Big strong kid with good hockey sense.” NHL Scout, March 2018

“Good size but not a physical player. I like his puck skills…he’s a good puck mover. His feet are his biggest weakness.” - NHL Scout, March 2018

“Smart player but the skating needs to get better.” NHL Scout, April 2018

McKeen’s Hockey (108th overall):

”Passed over in his first season of eligibility, St. Ivany returned to Sioux Falls and showed a huge improvement in his ability to drive results. An all-situations defender who can skate and provides a tangible physical presence, the Californian Yale commit should not be overlooked again.”

Flyers Scout - Nick Pryor:

"Jack is a really efficient two-way defenseman. He went through the draft last year and I thought he came a long way this year. His mobility is good, his first pass is good, his transition game is good. We're excited about him and excited about his future."

Future Considerations (211th overall):

”An all-round rearguard, he has greatly improved his skating, using his edges more effectively to pivot off checks and integrating more power into an urgent forward and reverse stride. With an upgraded demeanour and a boosted confidence, he’s turned himself into a quality contributor in Everett. He often takes strong routes to the puck carrier. He’s not overly aggressive, but he makes strategic choices that eat up free ice. He contains play well, even if he doesn’t bring a hardnosed element to the blue line. Boxing out bodies and focusing on lane management are his bread and butter. Top notch in doing that. He knows how to use his body, on and off the puck, and won’t shy away, but this is an area he could grow. In his own end, he shows an aware style of hockey. He’s a strong puck manager, who refuses to look threatened, even in the face of pressure. In other words, he’s got plenty of poise. His hands are solid and he is a good passer, who reveals a little bit of swagger in his dishes, always to the best option. He almost never panics. He uses a cerebral skillset to set up teammates and get shots on net with heady plays from the point. His slapper is not that hard, but he’s always looking to thread it through a screen. Puts the puck in good places. An all-situations guy, with solid elements to his game. Not dynamic, however.”

Hockey Prospects (NR):

”Wyatt Wylie had a productive campaign for Everett this past season while being used in all situations. He produced 21 more points than in his previous year, putting up 31 points in 72 games, with 26 assists. In the playoffs, he produced 8 points in 22 games with 6 assists.

Wylie is a transitional defenseman who has above-average decision making from the goal-line and out. Two of his better attributes are his hockey-sense and first-pass out of his own-end. These skills allowed him to quickly adjust to pressure, as well as assess his passing options to move the puck up the ice at a good-rate. He keeps his head-up and doesn’t look rattled when getting physically engaged, showing poise, a solid base, and enough awareness to make subtle, yet important plays. Additionally, he uses his impressive-frame and fluid stride to control his gaps efficiently in most of our viewings and was excellent at blocking shots, sometimes showing an impressive effort level and taking away multiple scoring chances away in a single shift. His skillset in the defensive-end made him a standout penalty-killer when we watched him.

Although he doesn’t have a high-end skill-set when walking the line, Wyatt displays a heavy shot from the point when given enough space and uses head-fakes and shot-fakes to readjust his angles and mitigate pressure from the blueline. He’s never going to be an offensive-force at the pro levels or be used on the powerplay but there’s elements of his game in the defensive-end that could entice some teams to consider him in the later rounds of the draft.”

Recrutes (84th overall):

”Teams are always looking for the late risers in the draft, the prospects who show the most improvement as the season transpires, and particularly when they rise up in the playoffs. Wylie was a stalwart defensively on Everett’s run to the WHL finals, showcasing his elite mobility, poise and smarts.”

Flyers Scout - Mark Greig:

"One of the things that's intriguing is that he's a right-hand shot and you look at trying to link your defense up where they're playing on their forehands. [He was] raised in Everett in a minor hockey system, so I think there's some growth left going forward as far as playing at a higher level that's maybe a little bit untapped. His makeup is he's a solid, steady guy. He's a pretty good defender with a nice compete level and he has the ability to make the simple play going forward, so there's nothing really flashy but he's a pretty effective guy."

Toisen viidennen kierroksen varauksensa (143rd overall) käyttivät ruotsalaisveskari Samuel Erssoniin (6’2’’ / 176 lbs / L), josta ei itselläni ole sitten mitään käryä. Takana on ilmeisen vahva kausi Brynäsin U20 joukkueessa, mutta yhtäkään peliä en ole nuorukaiselta nähnyt.

Future Considerations (169th overall):

”A lanky-framed goalie, he has all the makings of a solid puck-blocker. He’s a netminder who always tries his best, even if he’s left abandoned by his wellmeaning teammates. Even when he gets scored on, he bounces back very well. Shows good body language in that regard. He looks calm in his goal, no matter the circumstances. He’s capable of making reflex saves. Making side-to-side saves is not problem for him, either, as Ersson possesses great mobility. His rebound control seems decent, too. He isn’t afraid to come out of his net to challenge shooters and he appears to understand his angles very well. He never hangs himself out to dry with bad instincts. His positioning decisions are always sound. He doesn’t have a reputation for giving up soft goals. And pucks that do end up in the net don’t seem to shake him up. He manages to look as confident at the end of the game as he does at the start, no matter what happens during the game. His focus level and composure are very impressive, even in losses. One thing for him to work on – his pucktracking ability. When shots were travelling through traffic, it seems like he has difficulty keeping an eye on them. Other than that, the Swedish kid owns great abilities and attributes, including a high level of compete.”

Hockey Prospects (174th overall)

”Samuel Ersson is a goalie who played in Brynas’s system this past season. He played the majority of his hockey with the J20 squad, where he posted impressive numbers, featuring a .253 GAA and a .920 Save Percentage in 40 starts. In the playoffs, he produced a 4.44 GAA and .857 save percentage in 5 games. At the U19’s in Switzerland, he had a 2.69 GAA and a .910 save percentage in 3 starts.

Ersson is a modern-day butterfly goalie, who possesses a calm demeanour and fluid movement. His fluidity allowed him to come out of his reverse V-H or drop into it before most short-side shot attempts could get through. His ability to transition from a butterfly to a standing position and visa-versa is impressive. Furthermore, his butterfly is technically refined and this allows him to seal it shut on most shot attempts, as well as being able to absorb rebounds at a high-rate. It works in combination with his plus puck-tracking skills, giving him the ability to square up and stop the initial shot. It’s rare to see Ersson have to scramble since he doesn’t over-commit on most shot attempts and his rebound control reduces his need to make recovery saves. Another element of his game that helps him maintain position are his edges. He rarely takes away his own-angle on shots despite being an aggressive goalie, since he’s able to reduce his movement quickly. Samuel has learned how to contain his movement when he’s in the crease, giving him the appearance of a pro goalie, despite his age. Additionally, his reflexes are well above-average and he possess an excellent blocker, which took away several high-end scoring chances in our viewings. Although his blocker is sound, his glove isn’t as impressive at this time, though it’s still above-average relative to the other goalies in this class.

Ersson displayed a subtle confidence when he was on the ice, showing a lot of composure and net presence. He rarely looked disengaged or frustrated when he let in a soft-goal or when he was under siege. The more pressure that was applied to him, the better some of his performances became. Like all netminders, he still has some important development. He has a tendency to minimize his movement too much on certain secondary save attempts, and his athleticism doesn’t allow him to make a lot of explosive movements when needed. Though the combination of his puck tracking skills, composure, and refined mechanics help take away some of his concerns. We consider Ersson to have starting potential at the pro levels and is one of the sleeper goalies of this draft.”

Flyers scout - Joakim Grundstrom:

"Good size, really good feet, very competitive. You see a lot of upside there, he's in a good spot in Sweden too and we're excited about getting him."

Hexyn mietteet:

“We like his size (6-foot-2, 176 pounds). We like his athleticism,” Hextall said. “We think there’s some upside there that hasn’t been tapped yet. We got him a lot later than…if we needed a goalie, we’d have taken him earlier. We’re not chasing a guy at that point. It’s the opposite.”

Hainin mahdollinen projektio NHL:ää ajatellen on aika selkeä nelosketjulainen. Aloittaa syksyllä North Dakotan yliopistossa, joten ainakin laadukkaaseen kiekko-ohjelmaan olisi pääsemässä.

Future Considerations (112nd overall):

”A well-rounded centerman, he moves efficiently around the ice. His smooth stride and agility allow him to cover the rink at a brisk pace. Like fellow prospect and U.S. National Development Team peer Jonathan Gruden, Hain plays with a pile of emotion. He is a consistent spark, who can impact the game in all areas with his tenacity and two-way skillset. A timely player, he offers a sound positional game. Even if he doesn’t flash a lot of dynamic skills with the puck, he’s a quick, reactionary player. He backs it up with a reliable game – he limits his turnovers and he drives possession by lowering his shoulder and playing in a straight line. A ‘Point A’ to ‘Point B’ type player. He grinds hard along the wall and thrives around the net as he fearlessly hunts down rebounds and tips and turmoil. Even if his talent isn’t elite, his puck pursuit and energy allow him to be a point producer and an effective player inside the offensive blue line. That attitude should carry him further in his career. Sometimes, his emotional brand of hockey gets the best of him as he ends up trying to do too much. But nothing too over the top. This is a two-way forward, a generally reliable presence for his team. His urgency in all three zones makes him a pain to play against, especially along the wall. Lots of natural strength on display.”

Hockey Prospects (193rd overall):

”Gavin Hain had a decent year for the USNTDP where he put up 35 points in 61 games, including 15 goals. He was used primarily in a bottom-6 checking role for his team, however he did have spurts where he played with some of the more skilled players as well, such as at the Five-Nations tournament where he got some time on the top-line and on the 2nd powerplay. He is slated to play for the University of North Dakota next season.

Hain is a tenacious player with a thick frame that has a decent amount of skill who adapted well to his forechecking role. He’s got a thick and powerful build which allows him to generate power in his stride which gives him a solid top-gear, though his stride is a bit short and his acceleration is below-average. His frame complimented a high-octane motor that he used to create havoc when he was on top of his game. He’s consistent at aggressively tracking loose pucks and battling along the boards in an attempt to regain possession and is good at angling his body away from his opponents in order to protect the puck. Furthermore, he likes to enter high-traffic areas regularly where he cuts to the front of the net and look for soft-ice. We saw him use his frame to angle himself away from opponents in the slot area so that he could look for backdoor passing options or distribute it back to the point if his lane was cut-off. That being said, he’s not a playmaker, his vision isn’t below average but he has difficulty executing passes on occasion due to the speed at which he delivers them. Though, he does have a good release point and he generates a lot of velocity, however his shot isn’t overly accurate. Hain was one of the more skilled depth-players featured on the team this past season, due to this, he was given powerplay time in spurts where he demonstrated the ability to use head and shot fakes to set up his teammates along the half-wall and recognized the time and space he had to make plays at a better rate when given more room to work with.

He’s a player who competes hard at both ends of the ice and doesn’t give up on a play, however the most concerning aspect of his game is his rate of execution. He plays the game at a high-pace but lacks the ability to slow the game down or change the tempo of a shift when he’s carrying the puck most of the time. This lead to him creating unforced turnovers and he more often than not failed to bury his chances.”

Future Considerations (115th overall):

”A solid two-way presence, he possesses good skating balance and strength. His top speed is OK, but he’s not super mobile. He plays a mature physical game, to go with his alreadystrong body. Playing in a men’s league for most of the winter as a 17-year-old, he settled into a bottom-six role. In 31 appearances for Brynas, he accumulated only four points – and just a single goal. Not able to show much offensively, he kept his game simple. He doesn’t possess a lot of offensive upside or flashy skills, particularly in the pro league. But he does not make mistakes very often and he’s smart enough to know how to help out his own defensemen. A very safe player in that regard. But even limited, he shows decent flair, with short, little passes that can lead to solid scoring chances. Plays well in tight spaces. He’s not creative nor does he own high-end puck skills, but his hands aren’t cement and he’s got a decent offensive outlook. Can anticipate well, for the most part. But he works hard in the offensive zone, stationing himself often in front of the net. He finishes checks constantly and eagerly goes into one-onone battles along the fence, all of which buys him space on the ice. He has the ability to put sticks on pucks but at times he looks like he was mentally not keeping up with the game. Needs more time to adjust.”

Hockey Prospects (123rd overall):

”Westfalt can play at centre and on the wing; he can be useful in different ways for a team due to his versatility and smarts. He can play on both special team units. On the PK, he’s useful because of his smarts and effectiveness when killing time on the clock. He can hold onto the puck for a long time, and with his long stick, he’s good at blocking passing lanes. On the power play, he’s been used often by Sweden in international competition as the guy in front of the net. He’s big and strong; he’s tough to move from the front of the net and doesn’t have bad hands to score some goals here and there. He’s also able to take some punishment there, without feeling the need to reply. This year, he split the season between the SHL and the J20. In junior, he averaged over a point per game, and in the men’s league, he didn’t get much ice time (often the case with rookies in the SHL) finishing with 4 points in 31 games. Westfalt does a solid job down low, he’s a good puck-retriever and his puck-protection is really good. He knows how to use his size to his advantage down low and in front of the net. However, skating is just average for him; he’ll need to improve this over the next 2-3 seasons. Improving his quickness and acceleration will make him a better player offensively, as he will be able to take better advantage of the scoring chances he gets.

Overall, Westfalt has some good attributes that could make him a valuable player down the road. If he can improve his skating and continue to work on his overall game, he could become a bottom 6 player at some point. He’s unselfish and smart, and can play down the middle or on the wing. His offensive ceiling is not high, but he could be a valuable player for an NHL team.”

“He’s a big kid, played smart hockey and a pretty good skater. He’s responsible defensively …played a lot of PK minutes and his coach trusted him with key icetime. On the ice in the last minute with a one goal lead. Not a bad sign for a young kid. Didn’t show me much in the way of skill when I saw him.” - HP Scout, Mark Edwards

Takaraja tarjousten antamiseen on muistaakseni huomenna maanantaina 5 PM (ET), joten pian ollaan viisaampia.

JVR ilmeisesti siis lähes satavarmasti takaisin Flyers-nutussa ensi kaudella.

Laidalta on kyllä uupunutkin laatua, joten siinä mielessä hyvä hankinta.

Laatua top-6 kuitenkin ehdottomasti vaati.

Onko JVR Hextallin ensimmäinen ns. iso hankinta?

Jep. On aiemmin keskittynyt lähinnä Homerin ongelmasopimusten ja omaan palapeliin sopimattomien palasten poistamiseen tulevaisuuden assetteja vastaan. Oikeastaan se Streit <-> Filppula moovi muistuu ainoana puhtaana edes vähän merkittävämpänä rosteriliikkeenä.

Hexy piti hetki sitten presserinsä, jonka tärkeimmät tässä:

Adam Kimelman
Ron Hextall says Flyers will not re-sign Val Filppula. Said the focus will be on in-house candidates and see what’s out there in trade market or second tier of free agency

Sam Carchidi
Signing JVR does not affect Simmonds and the #Flyers’ attempt to give him an extension, Hextall said. He and Simmonds’ agent will talk down the road.

Sam Carchidi
Hexy would still like to add a Dman or C, but doesn’t want to give long-term deals that will box out one of his prospects. #Flyers

Dave Isaac
Ron Hextall seems pretty content to fill 3C and defense spots internally. Thinks Sanheim and Myers are close to ready (Sanheim, one would think, is a lock). Didn’t really offer much on centers though.

Broad Street Hockey
Hextall largely declines to name names on potential internal Filppula replacements. He says "we'll see" a lot.

Sam Carchidi
Sounds like Flyers are done for the day.

Eli JVR takaisin Flyers nuttuun.

Toisaalta ihan fiksua, ettei kenellekkään kolmenkympin tietämillä olevalle UFA-sentterille annettu mitään monivuotista lappua, sillä organisaatiossa on omasta takaa puskemassa Frostia ja Vorobyovia keskikaistalle ihan lähitulevaisuudessa. En silti pahastuisi, jos Hexy treidillä hommaisi jonkun pätevän stunttaajan kolmosen keskelle siksi aikaa, kun omat junnut vielä kehittyy muissa liigoissa.

Sentteritilanne lisää mielenkiintoa training campia ja harjoituskauden otteluita kohtaan. Laughton olisi luonnollinen vaihtoehto kolmosen keskelle, mutta Hexy oli ilmeisesti nimennyt myös Wealin peluuttamisen sentterinä mahdolliseksi vaihtoehdoksi (en muista mistä tämän luin, taisi olla jonkun paikallisen toimittajan twiitti). Viimekaudella AHL:ssä pelanneilla Vorobyovilla ja Vecchionella tuskin kolmosen keskelle eväät riittää, sillä paikalla kun hyökkäyspäähänkin pitäisi pystyä kohtalaisesti suorittamaan. Haastavat kuitenkin Lehterää ja kumppaneita nelosen paikoista. Frost on onnistunut hankkimaan lihaa luiden päälle sitten viimekesän, mikä antaa hänelle mahdollisuuden taistella rosteripaikasta, mutta vuosi junioreissa taitaa olla vielä kuitenkin todennäköisempää.

Yli jää vielä Konecny. Onhan nuo aika timanttisen kovat kaksi ensimmäistä ketjua. Mielenkiintoista nähdä, miten on tarkoitus hajauttaa tehot 3 ketjuun, kuitenkin Giroux - Couturier - Konecny pelasi melko hyvin viime kaudella yhdessä. Kuka laitureista pullahtaa kolmoseen?
