OLD TIME HOCKEY AT ITS BEST
When Calgary Flames tough guy Craig Berube ran at Mighty Ducks of Anaheim goaltender J.S. Giguere on Saturday, it's doubtful anyone in the Saddledome foresaw what was to come. The hit indirectly resulted in 279 penalty minutes -- all in the last 85 seconds -- and the final horn sounded with the Flames having only one skater left on the bench.
"It was ... pretty interesting," Berube, a veteran of his share of tussles, told the Calgary Sun. "I've never seen it before, honestly, in all the years.
Berube's check on Giguere, who was outside the crease, was just the tip of the iceberg for what followed in the 4-0 Ducks blowout. Kevin Sawyer answered Berube's act with a blatant cross check on Flames backstop Mike Vernon at the other end of the ice. Sawyer's intentions were evident, as he made a bee line to the Calgary crease, laid his stick on him and sent him flying into the goal.
It might not be another Slap Shot sequel, but expect it to be fun to watch.
