The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 5’10”, 185-pound center Daniel Corso, 6’5”, 255-pound defenseman Martin Grenier (GREH-nyay), 6’2”, 220-pound left wing Boyd Kane and 6’0”, 192-pound right wing Matt Ellison each to a one-year contract, according to club Assistant General Manager Paul Holmgren.
“Boyd Kane is a solid left wing that brings size and competitiveness to our organization,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “He has been the captain of back-to-back Calder Cup Championship teams (Philadelphia in 2005 and Hershey in 2006). Daniel Corso has 77 games of NHL experience and has good speed and skill. Martin Grenier is a guy who has good size, is tough and is a character player that will provide depth to our defense corps.”
Kane, 28, was credited with one assist in five regular season games for the Washington Capitals last season. In 74 regular season games with the Capitals’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Hershey Bears, last season, Kane recorded 20 goals and 29 assists for 49 points and 185 penalty minutes. He added 13 points (4G,9A) in 21 playoff games as the Bears won the 2006 Calder Cup Championship.
A native of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Kane has one assist in 12 career NHL games. In addition to playing for Washington last season, he was scoreless in seven games with the Flyers during the 2003-04 season. Over parts of the last eight seasons (1998-99 through 2005-06), Kane has recorded 112 goals and 168 assists for 280 points and 1,044 penalty minutes in 561 professional games. In 475 career AHL games for Hartford, Springfield and Philadelphia, he has registered 88 goals and 132 assists for 220 points and 901 penalty minutes. He played two seasons for the Flyers’ AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms (2003-04 and 2004-05), recording 59 points (22G,37A) and 289 penalty minutes in 131 regular season games. He was the captain of the Phantoms’ Calder Cup Championship team in 2005. Kane was signed as a free agent by the Flyers on July 14, 2003.
Corso, 28, recorded 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points and 57 penalty minutes in 29 games for the Frankfurt Lions (Germany) last season. He played for the Kassel Huskies (Germany) during the 2004-05 season.
In 77 career NHL regular season games over four seasons with the St. Louis Blues (2000-01 through 2002-03) and the Atlanta Thrashers (2003-04), Corso has registered 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points and 20 penalty minutes. Over parts of five seasons (1998-99 through 2000-01, 2002-03 and 2003-04), he posted 183 points (69G, 114A) and 123 penalty minutes in 248 career AHL games. He was originally drafted from the Victoriaville Tigres of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League by St. Louis in the seventh round (169th overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
In four seasons for Victoriaville 91994-95 through 1997-98), Corso registered 151 goals and 210 assists for 361 points and 153 penalty minutes in 219 regular season games. He won the Michel Briere Trophy as most valuable player of the QMJHL’s Regular Season and was named to the QMJHL First All-Star Team after posting 119 points (51G,68A) and 50 penalty minutes in 54 games during the 1996-97 season.
Grenier, 25, posted 12 points (4G,8A) and 278 penalty minutes in 76 regular season games for the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) last season. His 278 penalty minutes led the Wolf Pack.
Over parts of three NHL seasons with the Phoenix Coyotes (2001-02 and 2002-03) and the Vancouver Canucks (2003-04), Grenier has scored one goal in 15 career regular season games. In 291 career AHL games over the past five seasons, he has recorded 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points and 1,137 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round (45th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Ellison, 22, recorded three goals and 10 assists for 13 points and 19 penalty minutes in 31 regular season games for the Chicago Blackhawks and Flyers last season. He posted an assist in five games for the Flyers after being acquired, along with a third round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, from the Blackhawks in exchange for forward Patrick Sharp and right wing Eric Meloche on December 5, 2005. He also registered 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points and 35 penalty minutes in 48 regular season games for the Phantoms.
In 41 career NHL regular season games over two seasons with Chicago (2003-04 and 2005-06) and the Flyers (2005-06), Ellison has registered three goals and 11 assists for 14 points and 19 penalty minutes. Over the last three seasons, Ellison has recorded 40 goals and 71 assists for 111 points and 194 penalty minutes in 190 AHL regular season games.
During the 2002-03 season, Ellison played for the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League. He led Red Deer in goals (40) and points (96).
