SAN JOSE, Calif. — Dallas Stars right wing Grant Marshall was carried off the ice on a stretcher after a hard hit by San Jose\'s Owen Nolan on Thursday night.
Marshall was taken to San Jose Medical Center. The team said he sustained a concussion and would likely remain at the hospital overnight for observation.

With five seconds left in the first period, Nolan skated in on Marshall and elbowed him in the neck. Marshall fell back and hit his head hard on the ice.

\"In the heat of the battle you do some stupid things and that was a prime example,\" Nolan said after the game. \"I\'m not proud of it, and I just hope he\'s all right.\"

Marshall did not move for several minutes. With concerned teammates Mike Modano and Darryl Sydor close by, Marshall was surrounded by doctors.

Eventually, his foot moved and he sat up briefly before being helped onto a stretcher.

Because there were only five seconds left in the period, both teams were sent into the locker room early, with the time remaining added to the second period.

Nolan was assessed a 10-minute match penalty for deliberate injury and left the game. The seriousness of the penalty means a tape of the incident will be sent to NHL officials for review.

Nolan apparently was acting in retaliation for a hit he took early in the first period, when Marshall was penalized for boarding.

The Stars won the game 4-2.
