Report: NHL to change instigator rule
(Jun 14) Frontier justice is set to return to the NHL this fall and all it will cost you is 10 minutes in the penalty box.
The Globe and Mail reports the NHL's Board of Governors are considering changing the instigator rule by dropping the two-minute minor penalty given a player who starts a fight. Instead, a 10 minute misconduct will be assessed, meaning teams will no longer give up a powerplay if they're hit with the instigator penalty.
The NHL's health and safety committee is expected to call for a change in the penalty when it submits its recommendations to league governors next month.
The instigator penalty was introduced for the 1992-93 season as a means to try and cut down on fighting in the NHL. However, teams and players have argued that the rule prevents enforcers from meating out discipline on those who take advantage of star players on the ice.
The Globe reports other recommendations to be made by the healt and safety committee include measures to try and limit concussions and injuries caused by arena glass and certain pieces of equipment.
