1987 Finnish, Swedish and Nordic Champion in the Formula Ford 1600 - series
1988 Service in the Finnish Army; Champion Opel Lotus Euroseries, Runner-up British GM Lotus series.
1989 7th place in British F3
1990 A breathtaking battle with Mika Salo sees Mika Häkkinen win the British F3-Championship with West Surrey Racing, landing 7 wins. Heat winner in the Macau F3-GP, considered to be the World Championship in F3
1991 First Season in Formula 1 with Lotus-Judd, 15 races, finishes 15th with 2 points.
1992 F1 Lotus-Ford, 15 races, 8th with 11 points
1993 Starts the season as test driver for McLaren-Ford, gets to join the team for the final three races after the departure of Michael Andretti. Scores a 3rd place in Suzuka, finishes 13th overall with 4 points. Beats the late Ayrton Senna in qualifying.
1994 Completes the Season as #1 driver for McLaren with the troublesome Peugeot engine, scoring 26 points and finishing 4th in the overall Championship.
1995 Again McLaren is struggling with a powerlacking, unreliable engine delivered by Mercedes-Benz. On top of that the chassis is really bad. Mika finishes 7th overall with second places from Monza and Suzuka, a total of 17 points. Has to skip the Pacific GP in Aida, Japan because of an inflamed appendix. The worst accident of the year was seen in Adelaide, Australia, where Mika suffered a skull fracture after hitting the wall with 170 km/h because of a deflated rear tire on his McLaren-Mercedes.
1996 The start of the season proved to be difficult for Mika. Obviously he had not recovered mentally from his accident in Adelaide. He spun off the track on many occasions, and was losing battle to Coulthard in qualifying. By midseason however Mika made a stunning "comeback", and got back on the podium at the British GP, finishing third. In Monza he could have won, if it hadn´t been for his damaged front wing. The McLaren MP 4/11 turned out better than its predecessor, nevertheless still lacking downforce to catch up with the Williams and Schumacher. 5th in the Championship table
1997 The start of the season brought mixed feelings for Mika. McLaren hadn´t won in 3½ years, so it was quit depressing when David Coulthard and not Mika clinched the team´s first victory in ages. Nevertheless, Mika started off well, but by summer he had a low, losing to David in qualifying and blowing up engines in the races. The British GP at Silverstone changed everything. Mika almost snatched pole, and was about to win his first GP when the Mercedes went up in smoke. Furtheron in the season Mika achieved his first fastest lap of the race, his first pole position and could have easily won 1-2 GP´s if his engine would not have let him down repeatedly. At Jerez in the final GP of the season Mika finally got his first long-awaited and well-deserved GP win. The McLaren MP 4-12 showed its potential as the season grew older. In the last races Mika and David were clearly the fastest men on the track. The Mercedes engine proved somewhat unreliable, but these problems were understandable because by mid-season the engine was the most powerful of them all. Mika finished 6th in the Championship with 27 points, 4 points being taken away because of fuel irregularities at Spa. He outqualified his teammate 11-6.
1998 The McLaren was by a mile the best car on the grid, and Mika soon found himself in a comfortable lead in the Championship. With Michael Schumacher and Ferrari closing in by the end of the year, it all went down to the wire at Suzuka, where Mika drove superbly to first place while Schumacher was out with a punctured rear tyre. It was time to party!! 1st in the Championship!!!!!
Mika Salo
1987 Finishing second in the Finnish and the Nordic Championship in the Formula Ford 1600 -series
1988 First full season in FF1600: Finnish, Swedish and Nordic Champion
1989 First Season in F3 with Alan Docking Racing, finishing 5 x 5th and 1 x 6th
1990 The MikaMika-series in British Formula 3: Salo finished second to Mika Häkkinen in the championship, with 6 wins and 5 second places. Second in the Macau F3-GP.
1991-1994 After making a crucial mistake by driving after a couple of beers, Mika Salo had to stick with the All-Japanese F3000 series for four years, never really giving up hope to make it to the top one day. Makes his F1 debut at a track well known to him, Suzuka. Finishes 10th after a superb drive in the awful Lotus. Retires due to technical problems at the Australian GP.
1995 First full Season in Formula 1 with the Tyrrell-Yamaha. After a promising start the car, the Tyrrell 023, turned out to be a disappointment, leaving Mika and teammate Ukyo Katayama seconds behind. Nevertheless Mika scores 5 points with his fast but secure driving. In fact Mika didn't spin once off the track at a race. In his first full season in F1, Mika managed to make a good impression on the team managers of the top teams despite the terrible 023. With a fully new engine from Yamaha and a totally new chassis build especially for corners the most frequent in F1, namely slow ones driven with second gear, Tyrrell looked stronger than in years. 15th in the Championship table.
1996 Unfortunately, the Yamaha development team ran out of funds by midseason, and the engine could not be bettered further. It proved to be powerlacking and unreliable. The 024 however was quit good this time around, and you can imagine the team's disappointment in their own performance. There was so much more in it for them! 13th in the Championship table.
1997 The 1997 Tyrrell chassis was as good as last time around, but the Ford V8 was clearly a step backward leaving the team struggling on power. Shortly said, the season was a disaster, the only championship points coming from the wet weather mayhem in Monaco, where Mika managed through the whole race without ever pitting for tires or fuel. The V8 proved to be not only down on power but also unreliable, so Mika and Jos Verstappen finished only a couple of races. Next year Tyrrell will be getting the customer V10 from Ford. Mika Salo will race with TWR-Arrows-Hart V10, so he´s hoping for a radical improvement in his results (and we are, too!). 16th in the Championship table.
1998 The Arrows A-19 was a decent motor car with an underpowered engine. At Monaco though, Mika showed his class and finished a fantastic fourth and just missed the podium. It would have been very exciting to see both Mikas on the same rostrum at Monaco ! Through the whole season, Arrows was in financial trouble, and it has now become clear that Mika will NOT be driving for them in 1999. 13th in the Championship.
...eli ei se Salo ainakaan tilastojen valossa Häkkistä nopeampi ole, joten olisi kiva tietää kuka tämä "asiantuntija" mahtoi olla?
