"To summarize... it was the best 7 bucks I ever spent!!!
They played for roughly 2 hours. First they ran drills as they were split between 4 groups. They did breakout drills, 3 on 3 and so on. Then they played a 20 minute red vs white match. 10 minutes were 5 on 5 with the last 10 minutes 3 on 3. That was followed by a shootout. It was awesome to see all that talent in one spot at one time!!
Highlights.
- Super Mario was skating great. Any rumors of injury should be dispelled. One play while cruising into the corner, he magically passed behind his back to an open Brad Richards in the slot, who almost scored on Theo. The guy still has it! He was also playing well with Lecavalier on line combos.
-Saw alot of Heatley and Iginla together on line combos. They seemed to carry the play for much of the 5 on 5 portion of the match. Iginla scored just outside the crease on a helpless Theodore. A line to watch for.
- Adam Foote looks rock solid on D. I think we will have to rely on him to hold the fort. He was skating very well. Most of the D corp seems more offensive minded as Hannan skated up into the play an several occasions as well did Niedermayer.
- Final score was Reds 2 Whites 3. Sorry Habs fans but Theodore was in on all 5 goals... but i wouldn't fault him on any of them as they were all either a result of nice 2 on 1's or a gift in the low slot to a waiting forward. Theo did make some stellar saves that brought cheers from the crowd. Luongo looked steady as he made some great saves and looked a little less nervous than he did in the exhibition against the US.
-But by far, Brodeur looked like the obvious #1. He made one "Hasekian" save when he was belly down on the crease and then flipped over, arms flying. As he wheeled over, he brought his arms to the ice on the short side and stopped Iginla on what would have been surely a goal. Later on he let in a softy from Wade Redden during the shootout for the hometown crowds. The guy is all class!
Overall they looked sharp and carried alot of speed. They still seem a little unsettled on final line combos but I think the next few exhibitions should iron out those wrinkles. 8000 showed up and raised $30,000 for Roger Neilson House for children with cancer. A great cause indeed. All in all very entertaining!"
