Shearer shocked the football world when he turned down a host of other big-name clubs to join his hometown team in 1996 for a then world record £15m.
Former Toon striker Mick Quinn said Shearer was one of the best British centre-forwards there has been.
He added: "The biggest testament for me with Alan is he chose Newcastle instead of Manchester United. He let his heart rule his head with United because he could have won medals with Manchester. For me, that's the type of man he is.
"He's loved pulling on that black and white shirt, as I did. But he was born in Newcastle, which made it extra special. Every goal he scores in that shirt you can see the elation in his face. They are the medals he wants."
"Local pride means everything to him and for me there's no better way to go. It sounds like someone has died listening to the fans, and that's the way Alan would've liked to have gone."
"The memories are unbelievable, though. The day he signed, all his goals and the one that stands out is the way he celebrated in front of the Man United fans in that 5-0 win back in 1996."
"Alan Shearer is a great Newcastle hero. I saw his goal against Wigan on Saturday. It was a great goal for a great player who still has a lot to offer."

The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Coun David Slesenger, said Shearer, who has the Freedom of the City, has been a great ambassador for Tyneside throughout his playing career.
He added: "As Lord Mayor, I was delighted when he broke Jackie Milburn's goalscoring record.
"All citizens recognise what he has done for the city's image, both nationally and internationally.
"We look forward to honouring him in an appropriate way."

Ja legendan omin sanoin:
"My dream as a kid was to play for Newcastle United and to score goals at St James' Park. It doesn't matter that I didn't win a trophy because I did it my way and I lived the dream.
"Unless you come from the area you wouldn't understand that mentality. Playing for the club is everything. I broke Jackie's record and no-one can take that away from me. I've never had any regrets."
