SHARKS ACQUIRE TEEMU SELANNE FROM ANAHEIM
One of The NHL\'s Premier Snipers Comes to San Jose In Exchange For Jeff Friesen and Steve Shields

SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today that the club has acquired right wing Teemu Selanne (tay-MOO SELL-ah-knee) from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in exchange for left wing Jeff Friesen, goaltender Steve Shields and future considerations. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In 61 games this season with the Mighty Ducks, Selanne, 30, led the team in goals (26), assists (33) and points (59). Selanne, a seven-time NHL All-Star and Most Valuable Player of the 1998 All-Star Game, has the sixth highest goals-per-game (.595) and the eighth highest points-per-game (1.26) in League history among players with at least 250 career goals or 500 career points, respectively.

Originally drafted by Winnipeg in the first round (10th overall) of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, Selanne, currently in his ninth NHL season, captured the 1992-93 Calder Memorial Trophy as the League\'s Rookie of the Year following a spectacular 132-point (76 goals, 56 assists) campaign. Both his goal and point totals in 1992-93 stand as NHL rookie single-season records. In addition, Selanne collected his first 100 career goals in just 130 games, becoming the second fastest player in League history to reach the 100-goal plateau (Mike Bossy, 129 games).

Acquired by Anaheim on Feb. 7, 1996 with Marc Chouinard and a fourth round pick in the 1996 National Hockey League Entry Draft in exchange for Chad Kilger, Oleg Tverdovsky and a third round pick in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, the six-foot, 201-pound native of Helsinki, Finland tallied 482 points (225 goals, 257 assists) in 394 career games with the Mighty Ducks. Known as one of the NHL\'s deadliest and smartest snipers, Selanne, a four-time 40-goal and three-time 50-goal scorer, captured the inaugural Maurice \"The Rocket\" Richard Trophy after leading the NHL with 47 goals in 1998-99. Selanne leaves Anaheim ranked second all-time in Mighty Ducks history in goals assists and points.

\"Selanne is an elite player who is one of the top offensive threats in the game and a major weapon on the power play,\" said Lombardi. \"His presence should address several major needs for our club. This is a big step for our organization.\"

In 625 career NHL games, the gifted scorer has posted 788 points (372 goals, 416 assists), including 17 career hat tricks. His 372 career goals leads all players since he entered the League in 1992-93. In addition, Selanne has added 20 points (13 goals, 7 assists) in 21 career Stanley Cup Playoff contests.

A strong presence for the Finnish National Team in several International competitions, Selanne represented Finland in the 1989 World Junior Championships, 1991 Canada Cup, 1991 World Championships, 1992 Winter Olympics, 1996 World Championships, 1996 World Cup, 1998 Olympic Games and 1999 World Championships. He was also selected to play in the 1994 World Championships, but was unable to play due to injury.
Friesen, 24, ranked as the only player in Sharks history to play in more than 500 games with San Jose. Originally drafted in the first round (11th overall) of the 1994 Entry Draft by San Jose, the native of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan has tallied 350 points (149 goals, 201 assists) in 512 career NHL games. In 64 games this season, Friesen ranked fifth on the Sharks in scoring with 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists).
