Grigorenko's selection was overshadowed by another day of rampant rumors involving a possible trade between the Wings and Philadelphia Flyers involving Lindros.
Wings general manager Ken Holland tried to defuse the situation.
"Like I've said before, it's highly unlikely he's going to be a Red Wing," Holland said of Lindros. "It's not what everybody is reporting. I've had a couple of very brief conversations with Bob (Flyers GM Clarke). He's asked if we're interested. I haven't said no, but I haven't said yes. I'm not sure if we're really interested. There's a lot to it. If (Clarke) does something with (another team) in the meantime, then fine."
Rumors surfaced on Thursday when Clarke said Lindros would not be traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. They escalated on Friday when a Detroit radio station erroneously reported that a deal was imminent.
Carl Lindros, Eric's father/agent, is doing his best to convince the Wings to make a deal.
"At the request of the Lindros family, I flew to Toronto last week and met with Eric and Carl. All of a sudden it's a major, major story," Holland said. "It's not like it's being portrayed. I think I've been on the phone with Bob Clarke a maximum of 10 minutes since March. Obviously, you're not going to do any major Lindros deal in 10 minutes. It's gotten blown way out of proportion."
Holland said he's not sure if he will talk to Clarke again.
But the rumors will continue. A report out of Vancouver had the Wings swapping Brendan Shanahan for Lindros. Shanahan, however, has a no-trade clause and has shown no inclination of waiving it.
Another scenario has the Wings moving forwards Darren McCarty and Slava Kozlov and defenseman Mathieu Dandenault for Lindros. Disgruntled defenseman Aaron Ward, a restricted free agent who isn't likely to re-sign with the Wings, could also be dealt this summer.
Wings sources have made one thing clear: They will not part with center Sergei Fedorov or young defenseman Jiri Fischer in any possible deal for Lindros. They are also reluctant to trade any more high draft picks.
