Montreal Canadiens General Manager, André Savard, announced Tuesday the signing of forward Marcel Hossa to a 3-year contract (2001-02 to 2003-04).
« Marcel Hossa is considered as one of the best young prospects in our organization. He is a strong winger who possesses a great offensive talent, and showed a very good progression with regards to his skills and his maturity. We look forward to seeing him compete at the Canadiens training camp in a few weeks », said André Savard.
Hossa, 19, was the Canadiens second pick, 16th overall in the first round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. The Slovakia native led the Portland Winter Hawks in scoring, and ranked 12th in the WHL in 2000-2001 with 90 points in 58 regular season games (34 goals, 56 assists).
Hossa (6’02, 211 pounds) was named the WHL Player of the Month for March. He also led his team to the WHL Finals, a 5-game series against the Champions Red Deer Rebels. He registered 12 points in 16 playoff games (5 goals, 7 assists).
In three seasons with Portland in the WHL, Hossa recorded 65 goals and 99 assists for a total of 164 points in 188 games. He was a member of the Slovakian team at the World Junior Championship in 2000 and 2001."
