Deadline Shopping List - Forwards

Audette:
Good timing for a career season, the Thrashers are still hoping to re-sign the pending UFA. If he remains difficult to retain, they may entertain offers. Teams looking to boost their 2nd line and PP may inquire.
Value: This is the million-dollar question with no lifelines left. Audette has never been this kind of scorer in the past and the wheels could fall off the wagon at any point. Very difficult to gauge how much a team may risk on the diminutive sniper. Could be up to a 2nd and change, could be much lower.
Destination: Too hard to tell. Washington and Philly are possible.

Bartecko:
The Blues look to be pulling out the stops to gear up for a Cup this year. Bartecko has lost his coveted spot on the Slovak line and has been passed by both Nagy and Hecht on the depth chart. With the Blues still owing New Jersey for the tampering dispute, players like Bartecko represent their main trade bait.
Value: Bartecko is the type of player that is typically used to rent UFA.
Destination: Whomever the Blues rent from, the list is long and varied: Montreal is a possibility.

Valeri Bure:
He shook off the early season funk, but the pending RFA might prove difficult to sign this summer. Moving him now would save them some headaches later. This could be a significant win-fall for the Flames, defining the sell high method. Bure has gotten recognition as a significant scoring threat the past two years, but showed major chinks in the armor this year. A team looking for more bite might take a chance on Bure (hoping this year was a fluke) while Buttons would look like a genius of the past two years were the aberration.
Value: Bure could potentially land a 1st, or at least a 2nd and a decent prospect/player. Forwards with size that can score would be requested.
Destination: Florida often comes up and seems to need to offense. Carolina needs scoring wingers, as does DC.

Brind\'Amour:
The vet 2-way center\'s offense has slipped, but he is still the model of hustle and work ethic. He is at a minimum a terrific 3rd line center, but could still rekindle his 2nd line form. He is eligible for arbitration this summer and can go on to UFA after that. He was the key figure in the Primeau trade, but could be moved for the right price. His hefty paycheck limits his marketability.
Value: It would be a PR nightmare to sell low on Brindy. Carolina would want a 2nd and a quality prospect / player at a minimum. Canes have a long list of needs, so make an offer.
Destination: Dallas would fit him well and returning to Philly isn\'t out of the question.

Dandenault:
The Wings are trying to gear up for another run, but the cupboards are getting bare. Dandenault is one of the few marketable items they have left.
Value: Dandy is a speedy, versatile player whose affordable contract makes him appealing to small market teams.
Destination: The Wings may use him to land a pending UFA they can then try to re-sign in the off-season. O\'Donnell or Ulanov for example.

Dome:
The young cipher hasn\'t progressed since his rookie season. The Penguins are already loaded with skilled forwards, so he is not a top priority to them. They may offer up his rights if somebody is willing to take a chance on him.
Value: Minimal. He is the type often used to rent a pending UFA with.
Destination: Carolina (Hatcher) is looking to restock the shelves.

Ferraro:
He is a good bet to be on the move. His ESPN job could become fulltime as early as the season\'s end, so Waddell may be looking to cash in this chit while he can. Teams looking for a hardworking 3rd line character player will be calling.
Value: Thrashers should be able to land a mid-round pick for Ferraro, up to a 3rd or so, or pawn him off for a mid-grade prospect.
Destination: Colorado, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Toronto and Philly could be in the mix.

Gelinas:
The vet 2-way winger has bounced back from 2 sub-par seasons, conveniently in time to cash in as an UFA this summer. He is a decent 2nd liner or a good 3rd liner.
Value: His pending UFA status is the key factor. Getting more than a 3rd and change is unlikely.
Destination: Anywhere.

Gilmour:
Killer is showing the gray hair. This is almost certainly his last season in the league. While his offense and legs are leaving him, his heart and dedicated play are still intact. He would be an ideal pick-up for a team looking to boost the 3rd line. If the Sabres decide to plan for the future and not the spring, he will be on the move.
Value: If Hunter can land a 2nd in his final year, there is no reason to think Killer can\'t do the same.
Destination: Gilmour in Colorado would give them the best set of centers in the league and he would seem to add the spit, grit and determination the team sometimes lacks.

Graves:
The NYR have built up a core of fast forwards (Fleury, York, Nedved, Hlavac, Dvorak, Kamensky etc.) and this old warhorse is having a difficult time fitting in with the NYR new look. He still provides the same abrasive presence and hard work, but the production is lacking. Graves fits the bill as a good play-off grinder, so might find a new home. His hefty contract limits options.
Value: Hard to say. A contender-level team could offer up a decent youngster.
Destination: Going back home to Detroit (for Dandenault+) is possible. The usual suspects of St. Louis, Dallas, Colorado and Philly are also in the mix. If the NYR go Dutch, Pitt might as well.

Grosek:
Once touted as a future power forward, Grosek is now relegated to 4th line spot duty. While he is not going to be the 1st line power forward once envisioned, he is capable of more than he is doing now. Because he is still fairly young, he is one of the NYR more marketable items.
Value: Right now it isn\'t much. However, look for him to be traded this summer for a RFA another team is having trouble signing.
Destination: Have to wait and see…

Heisten:
By taking the Van Ryn route, the Sabres need to make some quick decisions on the former 1st rounder. He is looking at UFA via the Van Ryn route and that might be outside the Sabres ability to pay. He may be packaged off for a larger return.
Value: By himself, it seems unlikely a team would trade much for Heisten due to his impending UFA status.
Destination: Part of a bigger package.

Kamensky:
While his name pops up in rumors, moving him may prove very difficult. He is very talented with the puck, but invisible without it and frequently on the IR. Most of all, his contract is a major hurdle.
Value: Minimal. Too much money, not enough production, lack of durability and poor defensive play make him a White Elephant.
Destination: New York it is.

LeClair:
Clarke is making resigning LeClair a priority, but is having little luck. Since they have been without him for essentially the entire year, moving him would make little difference to the team. Clarke has stated he will move him if he is still unsigned at the deadline, but that could be a bluff.
Value: There is the rub. As long as LeClair is out with back problems, his value is nil. LeClair will likely be sidelined past the deadline, so Flyers will have little choice but to keep him.
Destination: Philly for now, then off to the UFA market from there.Maybe Colorado.

Linden:
Linden is a strong post-season player, even if it has been a few years since he has been there. A team looking for a solid 2nd-3rd line 2-way player might inquire. Salary could be a problem.
Value: The Habs traded a top-10 pick for him, but will have to trade for a loss. A 2nd and a decent add-in could be had, but unlikely for more.
Destination: Colorado, Dallas and Philly would all make sense.

Lindros:
The superstar center is holding fast to his Toronto-only demand and Quinn is still offering only table scraps. Clarke\'s hands are tied until one of the two backs down.
Value: Still high. Clarke will accept a conditional deal, but should still be able to expect a significant package along the lines of what Bourque and Fleury received as pending UFAs.
Destination: Toronto. Clarke\'s trade demands will likely go down this summer while Quinn\'s offer will go up, especially if LeClair doesn\'t resign and the Leafs don\'t win the Cup.

Morozov:
Once touted as one of the best prospects in the league, the Russian winger has thus failed to make an impact in the NHL. His 31 points last year still show some untapped potential. Given a fresh start somewhere else, he might be able to change that potential into production.
Value: The Pens will likely dangle him as bait in order to land a top 4 d-man with offense to offer and/or a vet starter in net for the post season.
Destination: Calgary (for Vernon), Carolina (for Hatcher), Montreal (for Hackett/Weinrich) or Phoenix (for Burke).

Rem Murray:
With the Oiler\'s play-off hopes up in the air, they may, as always, look to get younger and cheaper. Murray is a dependable defensive player who can chip in some points.
Value: Oilers would like a young goalie prospect, even a project. Otherwise a pick, a 3rd or so, may suffice.
Destination: Anywhere from Buffalo to Washington in the alphabet and anywhere in between.

Rob Niedermayer:
The big and speedy pivot was the Panthers first pick ever and has not become the scoring pivot they hoped. He may need a change of scenery to get his career back on track.
Value: With the Panthers in need of help up front and the blueline, they can be flexible. They would want either another good player (V.Bure?) or at least a very good prospect and a pick.
Destination: Niedermayer is a project with significant upside and may be well worth a gamble to teams like Detroit (Kolzov+), Calgary (V.Bure) or Philly (Divisek/Pletka and a 1st).

Peca:
It isn\'t a matter of \'if\' Peca is traded, but \'when.\' Peca is one of the best checking centers in the game and adds a ton of character to the roster. His contract demands are relatively high, $3+ mil per, which puts him out of the running for most small market teams.
Value: Peca represents a \'name\' player, so will likely command a return possibly higher than his actual worth. A 1st and a worthwhile roster player along with an add-in is a plausible minimum.
Destination: Chicago seems an ideal choice, as they have the extra 1st and the need for heart. Peca seems born to play for Dallas with his hard working abrasive style (remind you of any GMs in the lone star state?) Carolina, LA, NYI. TB and DC could also factor in.

Pellerin:
The Wild are trying hard to resign their leading scorer and Pellerin seems agreeable to the idea. Should those plans hit a snag though, the Wild won\'t take the chance of loosing their players as UFA for nothing. Pellerin is a solid 3rd line player on most any team.
Value: Wild are building from the ground up, so would be looking for a pick (3rd at best) or a moderate prospect.
Destination: Safe money is on him staying Wild.

Perreault:
If the Leafs do make a play for Lindros this year, they will need to make room. Now that they are getting healthy, they are experiencing a roster crunch. Since Perreault is a pending UFA, he may be the odd man out. He is an ace on the draw and clever with the puck although physical play and his own end remain a challenge.
Value: Because of his streaky rap and penchant for injuries as of late, the market may not be so good for a 1-dimensional player. Getting more than a 3rd and an add-in seems unlikely.
Destination: The Leafs will likely just keep him for depth unless they are seeking a roster shake up.

Reasoner:
Along with Bartecko, Reasoner represents the Blues main trade bait to land some vet help for a Cup push. He still has 2nd line ability in him, he is just not catching on with the Blues.
Value: UFA-rental.
Destination: Hard to tell, Montreal (for Weinrich) or Minnesota (for O\'Donnell), but pretty much anywhere moving a vet.

Luc Robitaille:
While the emphasis has been on resigning Blake, resigning Lucky Luc is also high on the priority list. Robitaille loves playing in LA, so it is quite likely he will. However, he has not gotten his name on a Cup yet and may be rented off to a contender at the deadline. Robitaille is one of the best goalscoring left wings ever. He is a good team player and would be an asset to any team.
Value: Luc should be able to net a return along the lines of what Damphousse and Recchi did: a good prospect and/or picks (2nd to 1st).
Destination: Could get interesting. St. Louis is gearing up and Luc would look rather good along side Turgeon. New Jersey has an extra 1st to play with. Can\'t count out Dallas or Toronto either.

Rucinsky:
The Habs have been rumored to be offering him for a year now. The plucky Czech is a good 2-way 2nd liner, though his contract size scares off many potential suitors.
Value: Rucinsky should be able to net a decent young prospect, the problem is finding a team that is willing to take him at his current price tag.
Destination: One possibility is for the Sharks to offer Korolyuk for some added scoring depth.

Selanne:
Teddy Flash\'s name is appearing in a lot of trade rumors. He is eligible for UFA at the end of next year (with a $8 mil paycheck to boot), and with the Ducks loosing money at the gate it does make some sense for the Ducks to be testing the market before looming UFA diminishes his value. However, the Ducks can afford to be patient and choosy in their dealings: Selanne is signed, healthy, playing and producing (although \'slumping\' by his standards).
Value: The Ducks will be looking for a substantial package in return, at least one high-quality young forward and a 1st plus change. Scoring forwards is s priority.
Destination: Who wouldn\'t want the Flying Finn? Toronto, Dallas, New Jersey, St. Louis all could happen.

Sillinger:
Florida is selling off vets, so this impending UFA is most likely on the market. The versatile and hardworking role player can fill on any line with ease. His face off expertise and speed make him even more marketable.
Value: Sillinger should be able to get a decent prospect and a mid to low pick.
Destination: Sillinger\'s speed and versatility make him one of the most marketable of role players on the market and represents terrific bang for the buck. Could be anywhere.

Taylor:
The tool man has been one of the most consistent NYR since arriving on the team and one of the few that earns his paycheck. However, Sather will need to decide what to do with Maholtra in the near future, who fills the same role as Taylor.
Value: Every team needs good role players, but most already have a full compliment of role players and are unwilling to spend much to add more. A mid-grade project/prospect is about all that can be expected. Not when more recognizable ones like Ferraro, Gilmour and Graves could be available.
Destination: Likely to stay in New York.

Whitney:
The Florida fire sale has begun. Whitney was a difficult player to sign and has not lived up to expectations. He represents a vet 2nd liner and good offer a play-off team some added punch.
Value: Even though he has disappointed, he is still one of their more potent weapons. They would want a 2nd and a player/prospect for him.
Destination: His smaller size limits his marketability to a team like Calgary, but most anywhere else is possible.

Zamuner:
The Olympian 2-way player had a timely comeback season right before he becomes an UFA this summer. Zamuner is a very good 2-way 3rd line player and may be used by Ottawa to get some help on the blueline.
Value: Ideally, the Sens will cash him in for defensive depth, or in a package to get some insurance in net.
Destination: The usual suspects, but LA, Montreal and Vancouver may enter into the mix in a goaltender deal. Clarke put him on the Olympic roster and might want to add him to his NHL one.

Deadline Shopping List - Defensemen

Albelin:
Tommy Albelin started the year by being a prolific pre-season scorer and horse early in the season, but has slowly trailed off since. On a contender, he would be a 3rd pair player. He is reliable and versatile and would serve a depth role well.
Value: Low. Albelin is also on his last legs. At 37, UFA awaits this summer and retirement is imminent. A depth prospect or mid to low pick is about all he could command.
Destination: Just about every playoff team seeks depth: Dallas, Buffalo, Ottawa and Philly for example.

Blake:
If LA can\'t get Blake resigned by the deadline, the chances of them resigning him at all look bleak. Not with sharks like Philly with a ton of money swimming in the water. Blake is a Norris-caliber d-man and drastically improves a team\'s shot at the Cup.
Value: High. Blake will get a return at least equal to what Bourque and Fleury netted.
Destination: While every team would love to add Blake, only a few actually have the resources to acquire him, are playoff bound as well as a legitimate shot at resigning him: Detroit, St. Louis and Toronto.

Duchesne:
The Red Wings are starting to get healthy now, making for a crowded blueline, especially if they try to add a bruising hitter to the group. Duchesne is more marketable than other options (Murphy, Kuznetsov or Gill) which makes him prime trade bait.
Value: Wings are trying to get younger while remaining a contender. Any decent offer of a pick and/or prospect will be listened too (ala a 3rd or so).
Destinations: Offensively minded d-men are a hot commodity around the league. Teams like Toronto, Ottawa, Boston or Carolina could be calling.

Gill:
Hal Gill has fallen out of favor in Boston. He is slipping down the depth chart, and could fall even more next fall depending on Boynton and Girard. Gill could benefit from a change of scenery.
Value: Mid-grade prospect or pick.
Destination: Detroit lacks size and muscle on the blueline, Phoenix and Dallas need depth, while Philly loves them big.

K.Hatcher:
Kevin Hatcher gambled on a 1-year deal to increase his value. If not for injury, he would have won the gamble. He has played a surprisingly effective 2-way game and could offer surprising value.
Value: Like Gelinas, his pending UFA status is the main factor. He should be able to net a decent prospect / player, but not a whole lot more.
Destination: Mario traded for him before, and could do it again, offering either Morozov or Dome and a pick to give the Pens a PP threat and 2-way top-4 defender.

Housley:
The veteran powerplay ace has had a tough season marked by injuries and below par production. Housley has never won the Stanley Cup, and with retirement looming in the not-to-distant future, he may want a shot at the prize. Housley has the final say in any trade and it was rumored that he refused to waive his no-trade clause for a trade to Toronto.
Value: Low. Housley is not very adept defensively and is close to retirement. The Flames incentive to move him is partially cost-cutting and partially just to give Housley a chance at the Cup, so a 3rd and possibly an add-on may get the deal done.
Destination: Buffalo needs some PP help, Flyers are sorely lacking skill on the blueline, Ottawa seeks depth and don\'t rule out the possibility of him playing his career to his hometown in Minnesota.

Lefebvre:
The normally steady defender is not fairing well in the attack oriented NYR scheme. Again, the NYR may have to go Dutch on his contract to find a deal.
Value: The NYR would like to trade him in for a younger model with more speed.
Destination: Ottawa and Pitt (if the NYR go Dutch), as well as NJ, Dallas or Philly are possible.

Boris Mironov:
The Russian frustrates because he is as good as he wants to be, and is content to float. He can be a workhorse #1 when he wants too. Chicago is thin on the blueline already, so could only afford to move him if they got a d-man of relatively equal caliber.
Value: Since he is their top d-man, they would want to get a good d-man in return.
Destination: Tough to say who would gamble on the expensive enigma.

O\'Donnell:
The bruising stay-at-home hitter is on nearly every playoff team\'s shopping list. Risebrough reportedly turned down a half-dozen trade offers before the season even started. Wild are trying to re-sign him, but O\'Donnell can cash in big as an UFA so that may be very difficult. Look for him to be traded.
Value: Reliable hitter\'s value rises significantly at the deadline. O\'Donnell should be able to get at least a 2nd or the equivalent.
Destination: O\'Donnell is just the kind of hitter Detroit needs, but \'Donnell is on just about every team\'s wish list.

Ozolinsh:
Maybe Ozo wasn\'t such a steal this summer after all. Ozo has lived up to his billing only as a poor defensive player and has failed to provide enough offense to compensate, making him a disappointment. He is ideally suited to an offensively minded team with a strong netminder to cover his mistakes.
Value: Carolina should be able to get a net profit on their deal at least by nabbing a 1st and a decent prospect / player in return. Carolina needs help both on the blueline and up front.
Destination: Toronto would be a hand-in-glove fit for Ozo. A 1st with Svodoba/Farkas/Mair and an add-in would likely get it done.

Pilon:
Hitters with attitude are coveted in the playoffs, so the NYR may get some calls on the vet defender. Pilon has a lot of miles on him and is known for taking bad penalties. If the price is right though, a playoff team may look to add him for 3rd pair depth.
Value: Not going to get much, but even a low pick is better than loosing him to UFA or waivers.
Destination: Detroit expressed interest in him before, but that was 2 years ago.

Smehlik:
He is one of the most steady and reliable d-men you can find, but his pending UFA status puts him on the market.
Value: Reliable d-men are highly coveted at the deadline. A 2nd is not out of the question.
Destinations: Any team wanting depth, in other words, anywhere.

Tverdovsky:
The young, talented defender is coming into his own as a #1 d-man. Tverdovsky is the most experienced blueliner in Anaheim to boot. While many teams would like to pry him away, it seems unlikely that the Ducks are actively shopping him.
Value: High. Tverdovsky went for Green and a 1st just 2 years ago and has improved since then. Because he is so critical to the Ducks, it would take a \'can\'t refuse\' offer to get him.
Destination: What team wouldn\'t want a young #1 d-man?

Ulanov:
The temperamental defender has been a horse for the Oilers this season, logging a ton of ice time and providing a nasty physical presence. Because he is a pending UFA, the Oilers may entertain offers.
Value: His FA status is the biggest factor, but he could fetch a decent prospect.
Destination: A big defender with an attitude is on a lot of team\'s wish list, Detroit would be a good example.

Weinrich:
Eric Weinrich is almost certainly to be traded. He is a pending UFA and it is rumored he wants to finish up his career in the States.
Value: The Habs had to bribe the Blue Jackets with a 2nd to protect him at the expansion draft, so that is a strong appraisal of his value.
Destination: St. Louis could benefit from some added vet depth (possibly for Reasoner) as could Philly, Colorado, Dallas, Buffalo, Devils, Pitt and Phoenix.

Woolley:
After being rewarded with a healthy contract extension, Woolley has been an uncharacteristic disappointment this season, even a healthy scratch. He is normally a PP ace and a reliable #4-#5 d-man.
Value: That Woolley has made a habit of overachieving in the post-season helps his marketability, as does him already being signed. He is worth a 2nd and a decent player/prospect.
Destination: Long list. His skill and experience is just what Philly, Boston, Tampa, NYI, NYR, Florida, Carolina and Chicago need.

Jason York:
The Sens are caught between a rock and a hard place. York is slated to be an UFA this summer, so the Sens would want to cash him in before he walks if they can\'t resign him. However, the Sens blueline is a thin part already and one area they are looking to improve. If York is traded without an equal d-man coming back, it isn\'t in their best interest.
Value: York could get a mid-grade prospect or a mid pick (a 3rd plus change).
Destinations: The return isn\'t worth the deal, so unless he is included in a larger package, he likely won\'t be traded.

Zhitnik:
Although he is unlikely to be on the market, because he is a RFA and makes a significant sum of money, Sabres might listen to offers.
Value: Tough to say. Zhitnik can be a very good #2 d-man, and fills as the Sabres\' #1 defender. He would only be moved (as part of a package) if a legit #1 d-man were going the other way.
Destination: True #1 d-men are rarely on the market, so tough to predict.

Deadline Shopping List - Goalies

Boucher:
Cechmanek has taken over as the starter and Ouellet is the goalie of the future. Trading Boucher is inevitable.
Value: His value is down, but if Clouiter can still land Aucoin and a 2nd, Boucher\'s is at least that level.
Destination: Flyers may include him in part of a larger package (with Lindros) for increased return. Otherwise, Boucher will stay in Philly until at least the summer.

Burke:
If you adhere to the buy low, sell high credo, now is the time to deal Burke. He is having a career year. Can he do it again? More importantly, how much will the 34 year-old UFA want this summer?
Value: Could be a great bang for the buck, especially to teams with a young goalie who are only seeking a netminder for this spring. Burke should be able to get at least a good prospect and a pick (2nd or 3rd) and maybe change in return.
Destination: Pitt has Aubin and Ottawa has Lalime for the future, making Burke a good option for this spring.

Dafoe:
Keenan has little use for his back-up goalie and does not play favorites when selecting who his #1 is (ala Fuhr over CuJo). If Keenan decides he prefers Grahame to Dafoe, Dafoe becomes a valuable trade commodity leaving Skudra as the back-up. While Dafoe is the more reliable of the two and serves as a better tutor for Raycroft, Dafoe would also get more in return.
Value: #2-#4 o-minded d-man and a pick plus picks and change.
Destination: Ottawa and Pittsburgh could be calling.

Fiset:
The Kings are finding themselves with a very crowded crease. Injuries have made it difficult to solve that problem though. Fiset is the oldest and most expensive of their goalies, which makes him the one they would prefer to move.
Value: The problem is finding a buyer. Of the goalies on the market, he is near the bottom of the list. Getting a 2nd may be out of reach.
Destination: Fiset could serve as back-up insurance to teams with young starters like Tampa or Chicago (the irony of it all).

Hackett:
Theodore is solidifying himself as the #1 goalie and Garon is showing enough to stick in the NHL. That leaves the elder Hackett as the odd man out. He is a solid starting netminder whose lack of success is more a reflection of the teams he was on and not his own play.
Value: It is a buyers market for netminders, so Hackett will go for less than he is worth. Habs need scorers, so would prefer a quality young forward and change for him. Because he is in his prime and signed for 2 more seasons at a reasonable rate, he is one of the most marketable goalies on the market.
Destination: Ottawa and Pittsburgh are the most likely to add a starting netminder.

Hasek:
The Dominator has slipped some this year, but that entails him going from the undisputed best goalie in the NHL to being somewhere in the top-5. He has alluded to sticking around next year so he can add some more precious metals in Salt Lake. Chances that he (and his $8+ mil paycheck) is with the Sabres next year are slim at best. If he isn\'t traded, he will be an UFA. Adding Hasek would go a LONG way to solidifying a team\'s Cup chances. Sabres are notoriously patient with their prospects, so of their 3 top goalies, Hasek is the only one they might move. If the Sabres don\'t think they have a shot at the prize, they may do just that.
Value: High. The Stanley Cup is the one prize that has eluded Hasek. When Hasek has his mind on something, he can be unstoppable. He should command a return at least equal to what Fleury and Bourque brought in.
Destination: St. Louis would appear invincible with Hasek in net.

Hurme:
Lalime has played exceptionally well at times as the starter, but still shows inexperience. A vet option is necessary for the Sens to make a push. That leaves Hurme as the odd man out. If the Sens do add a vet goalie, Hurme will likely go in the package.
Value: By himself, Hurme has little value. He would be part of a package for a vet.
Destination: Teams selling goalies like Montreal.

Grahame:
The other side of the Boston coin and the more likely name to be available. His antics earlier this season did not win any fans in the front office. Raycroft may have passed him already as the goalie of the future. Boston will listen to offers, but can also afford to be patient and let him stay until this summer or next fall.
Value: Mid-grade prospect or mid-round pick (up to a 3rd).
Destination: Phoenix, New York Rangers or Toronto could be possible.

Khabibulin:
The highly talented netminder is getting dusty after sitting on the shelf for over 18 months now. He is in his prime and a true starter. The hurdles have been hefty contract demands and ownership struggles. If the Coyotes commit to Burke, Khabibulin is on the out.
Value: Even though he has sat for over a year, Khabibulin can still land a good return off a team able to afford him. A package on par with what Potvin received last year.
Destination: That is the problem. There is a glut of netminders in the league, so finding a team looking for a starter for the next 3+ years and that can afford Khabibulin is difficult. At this point, it looks like Phoenix or bust.

Richter:
Although he has a no-trade clause, Sather may ask if he would waive it in the right deal. The NYR need to revamp the blueline and need some young blood in net. Only Toronto has an older duo in net.
Value: Richter carries a reputation as a money goalie, if Barrasso can land a decent return even when showing decline, no reason to think Richter can\'t do at least as well. The NYR would need a goalie back in the deal, so a young potential starter would top the list of desires.
Destination: St. Louis has been rumored already, but if the NYR pick up some of the tab, the market opens up dramatically. Mario likes to add proven winners, so an Aubin for Richter type deal is possible.

Vernon:
Now that he has signed an extension, his value is increased. He is a proven winner, and after a slow start, has shown he is still a player. But Braithwaite has also performed well, and they may elect to give Freddie the top billing again.
Value: Vernon may be the best bang for the buck on the vet goalie market. A 2nd may suffice, with a mid-level prospect or pick a clincher. Flames may also request a backup for Freddie in the deal. Top on the Flames wish list is a big center, if not a center than a big winger.
Destinations: Both Pitt and Ottawa represent perfect fits. Both of them have young netminders who have shown starter-level ability, but both also seek a vet winner for a play-off run. Vernon represents both a great tutor for the next couple years and a post-season starter for this year.
