"He's a capable player (Berezin) with a lot of speed who really shoots the puck well," Coyotes general manager Cliff Fletcher said. "We just think he's a natural fit for our team, and we're kind of excited about him being with us. I know the fans are going to like this player."
Renberg, selected for Sweden's team in the 2002 Olympics, played last season with the Swedish Elite League club team Lulea. He had 22 goals, 32 assists and 36 penalty minutes in 48 games.
In seven NHL seasons with Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and Phoenix, Renberg has 150 goals, 202 assists and 250 penalty minutes in 464 games.
"When you get a world-class player like Renberg, who already has been selected to Sweden's Olympic team and has proven he can play in the NHL to the level of two-way play you need, you have to be pleased," said Bill Watters, the Leafs' assistant to the president.
Both players are 29.
Fletcher said Renberg's refusal to play for the Coyotes last season and the vacancy at left wing created when Keith Tkachuk was traded to St. Louis were considerations in the deal.
"We traded away an asset that was not available to us and then came up with a player that we think can play on our top line as a left wing," Fletcher said.
