"Gagne was awarded a penalty shot after Thrashers defenseman Andy Sutton shot a loose stick on the ice toward him while he was skating near the boards with the puck. He broke in on goaltender Pasi Nurminen, faked to his left and lifted a backhander in for his 17th goal."
"The referee made the right call," Sutton said of the penalty shot. "It's just unfortunate it cost us the game. I just felt the stick shouldn't have sat there for so long. I just shot it ahead and it happened to hit the puck."
.. ja AJC kommentoi:
Flyer John LeClair had broken his stick on a one-timer, but the stick remained on the ice for at least a minute without the officials picking it up. As Gagne entered, Thrashers defenseman Andy Sutton used his stick to flip the broken one at Gagne, causing Gagne to lose control of the puck.
The Thrashers were aghast when the penalty shot was called -- and even Gagne said he was surprised, "I thought maybe it was a two-minute [penalty]," he said. Any time a player throws his stick in his defensive zone at an opponent, a penalty shot can be awarded, but this seemed to enter a gray area.
"It wasn't explained, and I don't think it can be explained. Enough said," Thrashers coach Bob Hartley said.
After the game, Marc Savard broke his stick in anger, swinging it at the boards. Ilya Kovalchuk did the same.
Said Sutton: "We looked at the tape, and it was the right call. I was mostly upset because the stick sat there for so long. Usually those guys pick the stick up. I think both the referee and the linesman -- although I think they made the right call -- I think they both skated by the stick a couple of times. I was just mad because it sat there and I could have tripped over it just as easily and he could have come in and scored that way.
p.s. Nurminen kävi hieman kuumana rankkarin jälkeen - harvoin molari tarvitsee kolmea mailaa pelissä :)
p.s.s Vielä tämmöinen yksityiskohta olisi syytä mainita tuosta pelistä: "Kovalchuk is now the fifth youngest player in NHL history to reach the 100-goal plateau". Kova saavutus ottaen huomioon nykykiekko vrs 80-luvun kulta-aikojen.
