Salamanders may not be the cuddliest of animals, but they can regenerate lost limbs and achieve amazing recovery of seriously damaged body parts. Now, a new report published in the September 2014 issue of The FASEB Journal, identifies a small protein (called a "peptide") from the skin of salamanders that may be the key to unlocking the secret of this amazing wound healing trick in humans.

The true identity of Jack the Ripper, whose grisly murders terrorised the murky slums of Whitechapel in east London in 1888, has been a mystery ever since, with dozens of suspects that include royalty and prime ministers down to bootmakers.

But after extracting DNA from a shawl recovered from the scene of one of the killings, which matched relatives of both the victim and one of the suspects, Jack the Ripper sleuth Russell Edwards claims the identity of the murderer is now beyond doubt. He says the infamous killer is Aaron Kosminski, a Jewish emigre from Poland, who worked as a barber.

Scientists are now considering the possibility that the exodus of modern man from Africa may have been earlier than 60,000 years ago as traditionally thought. Christopher Bae, a paleoanthropologist at UH Mānoa, and Wei Wang of the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities in Nanning, China, led a team of researchers that discovered two teeth in Lunadong, a cave site located in Guangxi, southern China.

Found in stratified deposits dating between 70,000 and 126,000 years ago, a time period when China was traditionally thought to have been only occupied by more archaic human species, at least one of the teeth can be comfortably assigned to modern Homo sapiens. Dating results of the Lunadong teeth, which include a right upper second molar and a left lower second molar, indicate that the molars may be as old as 126,000 years.

Mainitaan nyt ohi mennen, että alueella on ollut viime päivinä aika paljon pieniä maanjäristyksiä. Suurin on ollut 3,8 ja syvyydet 4-7 km luokkaa. All is on course for Wednesday's ambitious attempt to put a probe on the surface of a comet. Europe's Rosetta spacecraft is currently making a long arc around 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Shortly after 06:00 GMT, the orbiter will make a sharp turn towards the ice mountain, accelerate, and then eject the Philae robot towards its target. Separation should occur at about 08:35 GMT. Touchdown is expected roughly seven hours later.

Hissiyhtiö Koneen keksintö herättää ihastusta rakennusmaailmassa, kertoo talouslehti Financial Times. Ultrarope-hiilikuitukaapelin avulla hissilinjan pituus voidaan kasvattaa yli kaksinkertaiseksi aiempaan 500 metrin maksimimittaan verrattuna.

Ultrarope-kaapelia aiotaan käyttää Saudi-Arabian Jeddan kaupunkiin nousevassa Kingdom Towerissa, josta on tarkoitus tulla maailman korkein rakennus vuoteen 2019 mennessä. Kingdom Towerilla on suunnitelmien mukaan mittaa yli 1 kilometrin verran.

More than six years in the making, the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility is now slated to begin generating power before summer's end. It was designed by BrightSource Energy to use more than 170,000 mirrors to focus sunlight onto boilers positioned atop three towers, which reach nearly 500 feet (150 meters) into the dry desert air. At 377 megawatts (MW), Ivanpah's capacity is more than double that of the Andusol, Solnava, or Extresol power stations in southern Spain, which previously were the largest in the world (150 MW each).

But since then the plant has not lived up to its clean energy promise. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the plant produced only about a quarter of the power it's supposed to, a disappointing 254,263 megawatt-hours of electricity from January through August, not the million megawatt-hours it promised.

Touted as a clean, green energy, some environmentalists have turned against concentrated solar as a technology, deeming it dangerous and a threat to wildlife. The problem is that birds see the mirrors as water. As they approach, the 800º F solar beams roast any bird that happens to fly by. A recent study released by the California Energy Commission conducted by the Center for Biological Diversity called Ivanpah a “mega-trap” that will kill up to 28,000 birds a year.

Rosettan ja Philaen on määrä myös kuvata toisensa irrotuksen jälkeen. Näillä näkymin laskeutuminen koittaa noin kello 17.35 Suomen aikaa, ja sen jälkeen signaalilta kestää noin puoli tuntia matka maapallolle.

Laskeutuja vaikuttaa ponnahtaneen irti komeetasta heti sille tultuaan. Komeetan heikossa painovoimakentässä tästä seurasi lähes kaksi tuntia kestänyt hyppy. Seuraavan kerran Philae tuli takaisin pinnalle kello 19.25 ja pomppasi edelleen. Lopulliselle paikalleen se asettui 19.32 Suomen aikaa. Ponnahduksen seurauksena Philae päätyi ehkä kilometrin päähän alkujaan suunnitellusta paikasta. Yksi isoimmista ongelmista on, että lopullisen laskeutumisen alueella on varjoa paljon enemmän kuin tavoitealueella.

An energy firm has announced plans to extract gas from under the waters of the Firth of Forth following a major coal find. Cluff Natural Resources said a report by independent assessors estimated there were up to 335 million tonnes of coal under the seabed. It now plans to build the UK's first deep offshore underground coal gasification (UGC) plant. But environmental group WWF Scotland said the move was "irresponsible" and should be "a complete non-starter".
