(OTTAWA) – Jarome Iginla, Jose Theodore and Saku Koivu are the winners of the National Hockey League Fans' Association (NHLFA) annual player awards for the 2001-02 season.
Each year the NHLFA polls its hockey community asking them to vote on the top NHL player in three categories – Best Bang for the Buck, Best Role Model, and Most Valuable Player.
At a salary of $1.7 million, Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames is a bargain by NHL standards and took home the Best Bang for the Buck award. Iginla topped the NHL in goals (52) and points (96) this season while playing in all of the Flames 82 games.
"I am honored to be recognized for an award selected by the fans. They are the most important part of making our game successful and their support is very much appreciated," Jarome Iginla said.
The NHLFA's choice for MVP was Jose Theodore, standout goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens, while the Best Role Model went to another member of the Montreal Canadiens, Saku Koivu.
For the awards, the NHLFA polls its community asking them to nominate one player in each of the three categories. To arrive at a final winner, the nominations are short listed and then voted on by the entire Association.
The NHLFA was launched in 1998 to give hockey fans across North America and worldwide a way to express their views on NHL hockey and to influence the game for the better. The non-profit NHLFA is currently in the midst of a drive to secure corporate sponsorship for the Association.
