Auringossa tapahtui lauantai-iltana kello 19.52 Suomen aikaa X-luokan eli voimakkaimman luokan flarepurkaus. Siihen liittyi koronan massapurkaus, joka sinkosi varattujen hiukkasten pilven avaruuteen.

Purkauksesta tulevista hiukkasista suurin osa suuntautuu avaruudessa Aurinko-Maa-linjan pohjoispuolelle, mutta osa niistä voi osua myös Maan magneettikenttään. Hiukkaset saattavat aiheuttaa revontulinäytelmän Suomen leveysasteilla jo nyt maanantain ja tiistain välisenä yönä tai tiistain ja keskiviikon välisenä yönä.

China's first test satellite for detecting electromagnetic anomalies from space will launch in 2016 in a move that is aimed at improving the country's earthquake monitoring network and moving its seismological science forward.

The satellite will collect and transmit data on electromagnetic signals in the Earth's ionosphere at altitudes of 507 km. Studies suggest that strong seismic activity often causes electromagnetic anomalies in the Earth's atmosphere, ionosphere and magnetosphere, aiding the monitoring and prediction of earthquakes.

The biggest civil Earth-observation programme ever conceived begins its rollout on Thursday with the launch of a radar satellite from French Guiana. The EU's Sentinel-1a spacecraft will be followed into orbit by a fleet of other satellites in the coming years. Together, they will return an unprecedented volume of data on the state of the planet. European nations have so far committed 7.5bn euros to the project, through to the decade's end.

We establish a signal of pervasive and persistent multidecadal (~60–90 year) fluctuations that is most pronounced in the Greenland Sea and weakens further away. Covariability between sea ice and Atlantic multidecadal variability as represented by the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) index is evident during the instrumental record, including an abrupt change at the onset of the early twentieth century warming. Similar covariability through previous centuries is evident from comparison of the longest historical sea ice records and paleoproxy reconstructions of sea ice and the AMO. This observational evidence supports recent modeling studies that have suggested that Arctic sea ice is intrinsically linked to Atlantic multidecadal variability.

The results presented in this study support the conclusions of Vinje [2001], who found evidence of persistent ice retreat since the second half of the 19th century. Wavelet analysis of the time series presented in this work gives evidence that this decreasing trend is being superimposed on multidecadal oscillations in ice edge position in the Nordic Seas. The analysis suggests the presence of a 60–80 year variability and also of two- to three-decadal oscillations in ice extent. We associate the multidecadal mode with the so-called low-frequency oscillation (LFO) found in Arctic climate and possibly associated with the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation variability. Given the last cold period observed in the Arctic at the end of the 1960s, our results suggest that the Arctic ice pack is now at the periodical apogee of the low-frequency variability.

Syksyllä 2012 Suomea kiertänyt avaruusrekka muuntautuu nyt komeettarekaksi. Teemana on Euroopan avaruusjärjestön Rosetta-luotain, jonka määränpäänä on komeetta Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Komeettarekassa on Rosetta-luotaimen ja sen Philae-laskeutujan pienoismallit sekä runsaasti muuta näyttelymateriaalia aurinkokunnan kappaleista ja avaruustutkimuksesta.

Kotimaan osalta kiertue alkaa 2.5. Vaasasta ja päättyy 24.5. Seinäjoelle. Rosetta-rekka pysähtyy 16 kaupungissa Suomessa, Ruotsissa, Norjassa ja Tanskassa. Suomen osuuden päätapahtuma on Helsingin Narinkkatorilla 19.5.

Muutamien viime kuukausien aikana on aloitettu kahden superkorkean pilvenpiirtäjän perustuksien tekeminen. Kyseessä ovat Kingdom Tower, josta pitäisi ilmeisesti tulla 1007 metriä korkea sekä Zhongnan Center, josta pitäisi ilmeisesti tulla 729 metriä korkea. Kuten yllä olevasta listasta näkee, niin toistaiseksi maailmasta löytyy vain 5 pilvenpiirtäjää, joiden korkeus oli yli 500 metriä. Tämä lista tulee kuitenkin muuttumaan rajusti aivan lähitulevaisuudessa, koska rakenteilla on ainakin 15 uutta pilvenpiirtäjää, joiden korkeus tulee olemaan yli 500 metriä. 10 näistä sijaitsee Kiinassa. Kuten alla olevasta listasta voi havaita, niin yli 600 metriä korkeita pilvenpiirtäjiä on rakenteilla 5 ja 4 näistä sijaitsee Kiinassa.

First paper, then food, now homes— printing sure has come a long way since the Gutenberg press. The city of Amsterdam will now have the distinct honor of being home to the world's first 3D-printed house.

Conceived of by Dutch DUS Architects, Canal House will have 13 rooms created by an oversized 3D printer called KamerMaker ("room builder"). The printer creates large bricks from layers of molten plastic, which builders can stack like Legos. The stacked plastic bricks will ultimately become the framework for each room, and will snap together to become the world's first 3D printed house.
